Looks like Ryan Bowman is set to sign for a L1 club, but not Cheltenham who he’s been linked with. Burton Albion look most likely. If he goes, good luck to him!

Stockley to Pompey for £250k.

Ideally we'd have got more but seems there's not a lot of money floating around at this level. Good deal for them as long as they bin him if they get promoted.

Edit - Or not, Charlton back in the mix.

Yep, sounds like it’s us.

We’ve been his first choice all along as far as I understand it, think Portsmouth just been strung along a bit.

I’d heard from someone close to the club that he was looking for houses down here at the end of last season so think work began on getting the deal done quite a while back, guess other clubs being interested and putting in firm offers complicated it a bit.

Yes, looks like that's the case. We were offering £5.5k a week, apparently, but you topped it.

At least it shows that we are prepared to shell out for players that the Cowleys want.

You’re prepared to pay £22k a month for a third tier footballer?

Erm, what!?

Well, yes it would appear so.... and Charlton are prepared to pay more.

There are plenty of rumours that some clubs are offering as much as £10k per week to players at this level.

The Cowleys are shedding as many players as possible to give themselves the opportunity to attract a few decent players in key areas for the spine of the team. They'll use the remaining budget to bring in some bargains late in the transfer window, along with a few loans. Our fans are getting restless about the lack of activity so far, but we really need to wait until the end of the window.

Most clubs at this level will have the odd player on £3-4K a week so £5.5k for a club of the size of Pompey or Charlton would not seem unreasonable.
I would imagine Ipswich will pay more this season.

I think the bigger clubs (and there are quite a few big clubs with sheff wed, Sunderland etc) will be paying a fair bit more than 3-4K a week. Didn’t somebody say Ipswich were paying Harper 10k a week? I’d have thought we would be paying the likes of Declan John at least 5k a week as he was on 8k at Swansea. Sunderland were still paying McGeady 40k a week last season weren’t they?

Our lot got restless as well but Cowley rarely does early signings, it'll all come together at last minute. He won't compromise on what he wants and would rather use an existing player than bring someone in for the sake of it and off the back of that, he rarely made bad signings here (the one he did, he binned off after a month and sent him back to his parent club).

I can't vouch for his Huddersfield time but I certainly wouldn't pin too many hopes on his loan signings becoming key players because he generally viewed them as squad fillers here, bar Tyler Walker and Joe Morrell who were starters. We had a decent CB in Scott Wharton who was unlucky with the strength we had in that area, which meant he didn't play as much as he deserved but unless the likes of gijsbert_bos, Davidimp, Guernica etc can think of anyone else, they're the only three that spring to mind as being really good loan signings.

Agreed on the loan signings front. Walker and Morrell the standouts, Wharton as you say was good but didn't play as much as he might have because of competition.

Technically Harry Anderson was on loan initially, and we loaned Raggett back from Norwich as part of the sale. Danny Rowe's first spell was good, Ginnelly reasonably successful in the Conference season.

All of that said, he used to use loanees as squad fillers rather than key players, whereas Appleton was starting 4 or 5 loanees every game last year, and Johnson, Rogers, Palmer and Eyoma were key players. DC might change that if he has access to better players now; he brought Emile Smith-Rowe in at Huddersfield, who was one of their best players.

And as for the timing of signings, the Pompey fans will soon get used to hearing about "The Chain"®.

Are Sheff Wed paying anybody anything at the moment?

We are on the verge of signing Ellis Harrison.

Pompey fans - what do you think? Good, bad or indifferent?

He can be a handful for the opposition physically when leading the line. Not a great finisher though, so don't expect a big goals return. He's had quite a few injuries while at Fratton and could never quite nail down a first-team place. So I suppose I'd class this one in the "indifferent" category.

For their sakes, you'd hope so as they could be another basket case if they don't.
The first parts of their “back pay” has supposedly started filtering through though if it’s being paid in dribs and drabs it could take a while!

At least that sounds more hopeful.

Would that still lead to a transfer embargo until it is all paid?

He is best mates with the snake. I thought Oxford would be aiming a little higher than someone like Ellis though, who hasnt done anything of note since his last season with us

I think he would be the alternative bully the defence option to create chances for others if plan A isn't working. We also have Sam Winnall and Dan Agyei, albeit DA oftens plays on the wing but has played through the centre.

It’s not the calibre of player I expected us to go for.

What I would say is that we do suffer from a lack of physical presence, inexperience and don’t have enough senior players in the squad. So it does tick that box.

Must admit it was one I was hoping was just a rumour. Hopefully I'm proved wrong should it happen.
