If definitely had talks with Pompey, might have used that to get a few more £££

“I put the offer in [on a house] as soon as I left Charlton, with the risk I wasn’t going to come back. I never pulled out of the sale. Luckily it went according to plan.

At one point it did look like it would collapse with Charlton. It was ebbing and flowing.

They held discussions with him after a fee, reported to be around £450,000, was agreed with Preston.

“It’s an absolutely fantastic club and it is very close to where I’m from,” said Stockley, who had a loan spell with Pompey in the 2015-16 campaign. “It was something I did take very seriously but I felt my loyalty – in terms of the relationships I’d already built at Charlton – were too much to walk away from. My loyalty, on a sub-conscious level, was always hinged towards them.

“Every decision I made was almost based on ‘what are Charlton thinking or doing?’. In my head they had first refusal. I wanted to let Charlton play their hand before I made a decision on anything.

“It wasn’t a case of trying to use people to leverage my situation. There was none of that. I went with my gut instincts at every opportunity."

Probably more to do with us pissing about.

George Williams now confirmed on a two year deal. Any good MK Dons fans?

I know he wasnt with us long but he did play for us last. Started off well for a game or so then got worse and worse with each game.
Thats 3 of our disaster defenders from last season still playing in L1. Crazy

He agreed to join us in January on loan then changed to Charlton at the last minute. Probably has trouble deciding on his socks in the morning too

Doesn't sound like he has any trouble deciding to me.

Made it quite clear in both windows he wants to play for Charlton.

As Starnes said in May: "I managed to negotiate terms with Preston, which seemed to be accepted, and I was told all Stockley had to do was go in and knock on Peter Ridsdale's door and say he wanted to come to Bristol Rovers.

"Unfortunately, he chose to go to Charlton Athletic. Probably because of their position in the league and I've subsequently found out that our offer for Jayden was 50% more than Charlton are paying, so it was nothing to do with finances.
"We pushed the boat out to try and get Jayden but at the end of the day it was his choice to go to a different club."

Tisdale seemed to think it was pretty much over the line until Charlton came in.
You were paying a lot less than we agreed with PNE for wages too.

It will be interesting to see who else is on our list for the central striker role, after Stockley fell through. No names have cropped up yet. Not easy at this level to find that elusive striker that can hold the ball up well and also score goals. The Stockley pursuit has confirmed that we are prepared to invest to fill that position so hopefully the Cowleys can work their transfer magic.

Exactly.

So he doesn’t have trouble deciding is my point, as soon as he was aware of our interest that’s where he decided he wanted to play and decided before the end of last season that he wanted to stay.

Do you not think it may have been something to do with your club last season rather than all of the players?

Finally a little bit of news out of LN5.

Two loan and three permanent signings are close. Hoping to announce them by the time the squad return for pre-season training at the end of next week.

We signed Shaun Williams after contract expired at Millwall. On the face of it looks something we've missed in midfield. He's 34, but you'd hope he has the experience, but legs haven't gone unlike Charlie Daniels who was spent... Also very close to signing Gavin Buzunu on loan from Man City. Rochdale fans bit of a mixed bag of comments, some saying he was the main reasons they shipped goals. But an 18 year old keeper to get senior rep of Ireland caps is pretty impressive. Cowley wants a ball playing GK. Looks a good shot stopper.. Fingers crossed

We were a bit spoilt by having Robert Sanchez (currently at the Euros with Spain) on loan from Brighton the previous season, who was a few years older and a couple of feet taller! Young Gavin was an excellent shot stopper and decent enough on crosses (not as good as his much taller predecessor), but a couple of panicky miss hit clearances let him down (mind you, Bobby Sanchez's failed attempt to do a Cruyff turn around Ivan Toney at London Road wasn't his finest moment, either!), and was eventually taken out of the firing line.

As Pompey actually have a defence for him to play behind, he should be fine.

Our left back Lewis Page looks set to turn down a new deal and apparently will be training with a L1 club next week. I’d imagine it will be a club in the South East as he’s a London lad.

Prior to signing for us he had a shocking injury record while at Charlton but he played over 30 games last season so seems to be over the worst. Good player and would do well in L1.

I do wonder if that’s us. We’ve lost Josh Ruffels to Huddersfield under a similar set of circumstances. Looks to be a good age too.

Signed Ryan Tunnicliffe. Turned down a new deal at Luton. Looks like a good signing as he was offered deals with other champ clubs apparently.

After his first season I really strongly disliked Tunnicliffe, in hindsight I think what I actually disliked was the management of him as a player by Graeme Jones.

He started really strongly and looked great as a genuine engine room in a championship midfield but lost form was shifted position to playing as a DM due to injury and eventually looked a fish out of water even when moved back to his more comfortable box to box type position. Was a huge problem that first season we had in the championship with him not tracking midfield runners. He played every week even when out of form and over what in my view where (and remain to be) better players like Luke Berry. When Nathan Jones came back he became a more bit part player, when he did play it was in deputy to the likes of Berry and Mpanzu and he looked all the better for it. I’d have liked him around as a back up but fully understand him seeking more regular football. I’m remain not a big fan of his but he’s a better player than i perhaps gave him credit for.

Cheers. He'll definitely be a starter for us and should hopefully excel at League one level. Pretty happy about this one.

I’d have thought he would look very good at league 1 level, got the energy and athleticism of a championship midfield player, which as I think I’ve said a few too many times now is one of the noticeable differences between league 1 and championship level. Not the best user of the ball as in he won’t be threading eye of a needle type passes, but he will get you ticking.

The same reason why i think we will do ok this coming season.......the wont be many if any teams fitter than us.
Evatt had them all in Friday doing pre season Health checks and we are fortunate to still have decent medical facilities from our premier/Alladyce years.
What is evident is that teams in lge 1 this season are all ripping up there squads and rebuilding this again could give us a decent start though we have a horrendous September.
August cannot come quick enough

Although as of a last week, there are 18 teams in L1 who've had less combined ins and outs than Bolton so it's perhaps a little early to see what squad churns will be.

The two sides who had the highest squad churns last season ended up competing in the L1 PO Final so although settled squads are preferable, it's not the end of the world.

From a outsiders perspective thats how it may look we have brought 7 in without losing any of our starting 11 from the last game of the season.....Two of those brought in Dapo and John are loans that have been made permanent. That amounts to 5 signings add the return of Politic out all last season and our squad is a lot stronger.
Players that we have released could not force themselves into the final 11 yet i can see three of the 5 remaining new signings to maybe start next season in Dixon, Johnson and Sheehan

Looks like Ben Amos to Wigan and Craig MacGillivray to us.

Happy with that, looks like we've upgraded in that department.

Re Tunnicliffe to Pompey… think that’s a fairly shrewd signing. He was very inconsistent for us, but technically a very sound player for a lower championship side. He will however need to get stuck in more at L1 level. He’s also a bit too technical for a Cowley side, so I’m intrigued as to how he’s going to be played.
