Well we’ve just signed Jamie Robson off you. What’s he like?
Agree with Guernica and YEO YEO YEO, it's not worked here and I think that's because he's out of his depth at L1 level. He wasn't stinking bad, but he was bad enough to know within a few games he wasn't good enough and it was poor business from us. Didn't contribute anything going forward, not great defensively and will be targeted for his lack of height/physicality by more direct sides. Unfortunately a lack of alternatives meant he played more than Kennedy would have liked in my opinion. Can't even blame the formation/style of play really because he played under both Appleton and Kennedy and neither could get a tune out of him.

As said, we've been blessed with LB's since 2016 so it was a tall order to be at that level, but even so, a disappointing 18 months of him. He cost us 3 or 4 goals in the first half of the season. As mentioned, a stupid handball at Shrewsbury but he also made an error for Morecambe's goal and was at fault for your equaliser earlier in the season when he tried to shoot from 30 yard on his weak foot in the centre of the pitch!

You'll not find many who're disappointed to see him leave, he was an obvious one to get rid of.

We'll have to see if Boyes is any better, it does seem weird to have effectively swapped LWB/LB's!

But other then that he’s great…

You never know how he will perform in a new team and new manager. He really has struggled to make the position his own despite being given multiple chances. He does seem to have bulked up a little bit this season and has shown some encouraging signs, but still seems a liability.

Fee agreed with Everton for Broadhead after they turned down our original 1m bid at the start of the week. Deal was always looking likely though as soon as they recalled him from Wigan during the week who sound gutted to have lost him. He was in the box today watching us beat Rotherham.

Also sat with George Hirst who we look like we’re finally getting. Excellent. Two brilliant signings.

No wonder your current attackers went goal crazy - they know there is competition coming in for their places!

Connor Hall departs Vale for Colchester to be closer to his Cambridgeshire home (he commutes).

Probably one of the best January signings we have had, was a rolls Royce of a centre half in league two and a massive part of our promotion, especially his goal line clearance to keep us 2 up in the final.

Had struggled a bit in league one and hadn’t stepped up as we’d have hoped but had started to improve in recent weeks. Sad to see him leave and crucial we get a replacement in as we look short on centre halves now and have little experience in there.

Fee is around £1.3m apparently after they rebuffed a £1m offer for Broadhead. Though terms not yet agreed with the player.

Hirst watched us at home to Rotherham today and will be announced tomorrow morning I'm sure.

Have Blackburn and Leicester ended the loan?

Yup. We're loaning Hirst, with a view to a perm in the summer (assuming on the basis that we are promoted).
I expected better from him career wise after watching his progress as a youth, his move to Leicester via Belgium has regressed him.

Looked quality for Pompey post Xmas and wouldn't back against him scoring when we play in Feb.

But as we sang. Your dad's legend but you're a c*** so hoping he fails like an Adam Proudlock drugs test

Signing Tyreik Wright from Villa. Supposedly beaten Pompey to his signature. Been on loan at Bradford this season.

Be interested to see how Hirst gets on at Ipswich.

Everywhere he's been he has failed except when Cowley decided to give him a run of games so there was no expectation on him to shine in every appearance. As a fanbase we had all but given up on him and were happy to send him back in the January window and cancel the loan. The pre Christmas (odd start and sporadic sub) and post Christmas (constant starter) versions of Hirst were like two different players. Once he built up some momentum he was unstoppable. He suddenly developed confidence and had pace, power and a clinical finisher.

With Ipswich's abundance of options I can't see him getting time though and will be expected to hit the ground running. Something he has failed to do everywhere he's been.

If you can get the confident version of Hirst we enjoyed at the second half of last season then you've got one hell of a striker on your hands. His performances alone would seal you a promotion spot.

I know how highly Danny Cowley rated him and wasted most of the summer transfer window trying to broker a deal with him but we could never afford a big enough percentage of his wages. Probably ended up costing him his job as we panic loaned Pigott and Scarlett at the 11th hour when finally admitting defeat.

His dad was England's best striker we never had

I don't like being that negative when giving views on a player, honest!

He does try to be fair to him, there's no doubt he puts the effort in and wants to make an impression and put in good performances.

Not sure whether it's just me, but if Ipswich pull these deals off, does it not come across as though they're making far harder work of, and spending far too much in, getting out of L1? Seems an overkill to me, surely you shouldn't need that much quality?

There's perhaps an argument that it's not just for L1 but an eye on the Championship as well, but still.

Sure he did play for England although never established himself.

Seem to remember a game against Spain where he was outstanding.
Never played v Spain

After all, Sir Bobby Robson famously said that, “It’s not a question of who will replace Lineker, but who will partner David Hirst”

We have a permanent forward and loan left-sided central defender coming in this week - no idea on names though.

I must have been thinking of someone else from that era, but remember staying up late as a young teenager to watch bbc sport highlights of an England friendly against Spain, and a fringe player had the game of their life and we won wearing a sky blue third kit. Always thought it was Hirst but my memory fails me!

This is the only time England played Spain around that time - David White played, but England lost 1-0. England were wearing the blue kit you mention as well.

EDIT: From Wikipedia - He made his full international debut in a friendly against Spain, but missed a chance to score early on and lost confidence. White received strong press criticism, and lost form in the aftermath.

Hirst was better than Shearer in every single department bar the one that counted. Hirst never knuckled down and loved a beer....

Fair enough. I suppose expectations on him will be lower here, what we’re looking for is basically someone solid to help us stop leaking goals all over the place and try and finish 20th. I’d imagine your targets are a bit higher. As long as he works hard I’m sure he’ll help improve us.

He also didn't blatantly back kick a player in the chest during a league match, with all the cameras showing he clearly meant it, and got away with it AND the England manager (Bobby Robson), pretending it didn't happen

Amazing how your mind can trick you over the years! Must’ve been White, and not quite the performance I thought it was.
