From that, it reads like Cambridge have followed us down the dangerous path of taking risk on better quality players who you can't keep on the pitch. After the last two seasons, we've moved away from that though with Walsh being released this summer, Bridcutt the season before and I suspect we'll be looking to move Bishop on as well.

One of the first things Kennedy mentioned was availability of players, or lack of in some players.
I mean, we’re not filling the entire squad up with injury prone players but we have taken a punt on one or two, probably slightly more than we have previously. We have got some good solid regular performers too who will play 35+ games next season so I’m relatively content as long as the blend is right. It’s such a tough balance to get right.

Dan Butterworth in from Blackburn on a 2 year deal.

Have to say I know F all about him.
Maybe Port Vale fans can shed some light.

He shows flashes that he can be a good player but his performances did nosedive after January. Can probably attribute some of that to our dodgy pitch. Decent runner with the ball and pretty good linkup play too. I’m still not sure after a year of him being with us what his position is meant to be though.

Doesn’t sound like the kind of player we need then to be honest. We’ll see. Got to trust our manager on this one.

Surely we're not in for more midfielders and if we were interested in wingers as first-team players then Omari Patrick would have signed a contract extension so can only assume Simmo sees him as a potential striker or as someone who can feature up front or on the wing if we do switch to a formation with wingers but with no guarantees of where he'll be played (which is why Patrick left). Seems more of a punt than a statement signing but like you say, we gotta trust Simmo's judgement.

Yeah go with that, had a couple of games where he was unplayable such as Plymouth away but very anonymous mostly after Xmas and dropped out the side.

One of those that could do something decent then you’d forget he was on the pitch but a bit of a Louis Dodds as not sure what position he is.

He’s not a striker, oddly that Plymouth game was left wide man but he’s kind of a number 10 behind the striker possibly.

Omari Patrick saw himself as a winger and wanted to be played there but we usually lined up 3-5-2 and Patrick would be used as one of the two, which he didn't like and is the reason why he rejected the contract offer. Presumably Simmo sees the same sort of potential to play up front in Butterworth.

We already have plenty of capable midfielders to fill the three central slots so I can't imagine Simmo sees him as another one to compete in there.

Butterworth isn’t really a striker, he’s strong point is picking up the ball in the middle and running at a defence (plus has a rocket of a strike) so is wasted up front.

In our 3-5-2 we tended to play him attacking midfield

Yeah when he joined he was billed by DC as having some similar attributes to James Wilson which I could see in patches. Very much a signing that you’re buying the potential upside if he can put it together. I think Simpson is a very good manager so it’s quite plausible he gets him going. Just know it’s now written for Butterworth to set up the winner for Edmo for Carlisle end of August against us.

Jordan Cousins in on a one year deal. We are certainly going down the experienced route this season after last year being down the bottom. Another leader to add to the squad already in place.

What's he like Wigan/Charlton fans?

Obviously been a few years since I’ve watched him properly but he’s a good player when fit, which doesn’t seem to be too often these days unfortunately for him.

Butterworth isn't a bad player his goal away at Lincoln was a great finish. He just drifts in and out of games alot.

I would’ve had Butterworth back at vale in heartbeat.
Intelligent player, finds space, picks a good pass, never really got a run after the annual winter shutdown at PVFC .
Clarke never really trusted him I don’t think, it’s a shame there’s definitely a decent player in there

Possible Simmo could play two 10s (Gibson and Butterworth) behind an agile targetman like Edmo with two dms behind them. Saw Stoke play that way and it seemed quite effective, almost like a 3-4-3 but two of the forwards played narrow.

Yeah we’re stacked in terms of midfielders, but this signing sounds like he’s competing with Gibson and Mccalmont for the attacking mid role, unless like northern says we play with two 10s.

I would like us to sign a wide pacey attacker though. The ability to switch to a 4-3-3 with Patrick and Gibson operating as wingers was a plus point last season and turned a fair few games in our favour. I’d like that option again but as things stand we don’t really have the personnel for it.

Meh....he did the odd flash of things that were good (see our goal against Charlton at home for instance) but had a number of games where he just wasn't involved. I wouldn't have gone back in for him as I don't think he offers enough. In the good weather, in behind the strikers, he might do OK. Otherwise he's that sort of luxury player that can have several anonymous games in a row.

Things have now gone full circle from a few years back when it was our recruitment algorithm that had just one question of “have they played for Carlisle in the last five years?”. Just waiting for yourselves to announce James Wilson now.

Clearly you're an upgrade on Bradford as the number of ex bantams in our squad has dwindled

Signed centre half Manny Monthe on a 2 year deal. Left footed so adds balance back there, apparently we’re going 3 at the back this year. Manager a big fan of the system but injuries stopped us last year.

Really good defender. Never been so confident seeing one of our players in a defensive dual or physical battle. Very quick, very strong. Just can't kick a ball and isn't a threat at all in the opposition area for such a strong lad.

Surprised Clarke even played loanees. he always kept ours on the bench, which included Internationals Connor Roberts and £17.5 million man Oli McBurnie at the same time. Potential of 20M on our bench in L2!

Harry Lewis to Barnsley apparently. Excellent goalkeeper and a really nice lad. Should be looking to develop into a Championship player if he continues the way he is. Be really disappointed if he moves on - best 'keeper we've had in years. Yet another season in League 2 if it does happen.

He didn’t often, look at Dennis Politic for example over 18 Months, Holy lasted a few weeks all be it wasn’t great for us.

Barnsley are selling Brad Collins to a Championship club according to Sky, so they will need another keeper, so this probably has legs to it.

I’m guessing you saw him with Col U?

Both. I’m slap bang in the middle of Teyn and the Ewes, so I get to cast my eye over each of them. L1 is certainly his absolute ceiling, unlike Colchester’s current RB.
