A team that play in the Conference Premier.

They've making some very good signings to be fair, Scott Doe one of them.

Lord knows what they're offering in wages then. Ourselves, a couple other L1 clubs and Luton were interested.

See they've signed Charlie McDonald too.

The thing is Wigan aren't like Wolves though.

There's a lot of fair weather support in Wigan, they have a completely unproven manager, they've spent the last 12 months selling the remnants of their FA Cup winning side (McArthur, McManaman, McClean, Watson all sold, the likes of Al-Habsi, Carson etc released) and with little investment in other players (£1 million given their scenario is chicken feed) it's painfully obvious to see that Whelan wants his cash back and is cutting his investment in the club by pocketing the parachute payments and transfer income whilst making a small amount of money available to the team. Hence the investment in good and up and coming League One players over players that have a lot of experience in the Championship.

Wolves, even without a parachute payment, would have pissed the league in any scenario unless Steve Davis got the job over Kenny Jackett. A well supported club with good players and bought astutely to get them out of the division. Whole different case to Wigan.

Then you have the managerial argument, Jackett vastly experienced at this level, Caldwell could be a dud, only time will tell.

I think Wigan won't get promotion this season personally, think they'll be here for at least two-three seasons.

If Wigan are still in this division when the parachute payments dry up then they will be in the bottom two tiers again for a long time.
I hope that is the case too as they are a lower league team in every respect.

The CB we are interested in has been offered somewhere abroad for a lot more money. Sounds like Parkinson is putting his eggs in one basket with him as he's talking about Sheehan and Routis playing there if we don't get this target which is worrying as they're both terrible there.

Not as terrible as Callum Ball though so every cloud.

I've never understood parachute payments. I know what they are meant to be for, but still don't understand.

Where else do you ever get a handout for being rubbish and getting demoted?

How many clubs keep all their best players and bounce straight back to the Prem when they get relegated? Norwich this year? Newcastle a few year ago (who are a massive club anyway)? Might be a handout but I can't see how it's massively beneficial in terms of guaranteeing success and they stop clubs going bankrupt paying out the remainder of silly contracts that they can't afford in the Champ. Also this is ignoring the fact the Premier League is a private company and if they want to hand out money to ex-members then there's really not a lot anyone can do about it.

I'm in favour of parachute payments because the Premier League already has an alarming culture of wanting its member clubs to spend stupid amounts of money in order to compete. In order to get chairmen to do that they have to make reassurances.

Plus teams who use parachute payments in a boom or bust attempt to get back up to the Premier League often fail with hilarious consequences, just look at Blackburn splashing out millions on Jordan Rhodes whose goals barely kept them in the Championship in his first season there. Barring a miracle it's likely that they'll never get to the Prem again without investment now they've squandered a large bulk of the parachute money.

He has been in Portugal for the last week with Luton hasn't he?
Yeah he has you would think it'd be a done deal to them but he must be holding out for something else to come along whether it be higher football or more money?

Agreed.
Doubt if you could substantially better Luton's wages offer, but if you could match it or get close he may well fancy League 1 rather than League 2.

Darragh McAnthony said Craig Mackail-Smith was just training with Luton for fitness purposes, he wasn't like on a trial or anything.

Callum Ball looks like he worked at McDonalds last season.

He scored from a yard out though so I reckon he'll be offered a contract.

Rumour are we are going to sign Nathan Blissett from Bristol Rovers, I know nothing at all about him. I think he's a striker.

If it's who I think it is, then he's very raw, strong and athletic but needs work on his finishing. I wouldn't expect a lot from him straight away.

Looks as if the rumour has come from the fact our official twitter has started following him, I doubt he would be 1st choice anyway.
