another that we were rumoured to be sniffing around but have been beaten to the punch - the only WW transfer gossip I've heard about this close season are ones where we're "interested" but then they end up signing for someone else.
I was bored enough today to have a look at how busy each team have been, and there's definitely a cluster of teams in Portsmouth, Burton, Stevenage, Oxford and Port Vale who seem to have done the bulk of their business already by July, and a few in Barnsley, Northampton, Reading and Wycombe who just haven't done anything at all at this point.

Average number of signings by this point is 3.

We’ve certainly been more proactive than we were last summer after the playoffs where the club did say that had set them back on planning. While that came across as an excuse to me it does appear Carlisle have encountered the same. I don’t think there’s any hard and fast rule on it, usually the reasoning for being slow out the blocks is the expectations of some players diminish but there is a risk all the top targets are gone by then and you end up with a series of loans like we did who were out of their depth at this level.

One of our worst seasons though was when we got our business done early under Martin Foyle and it went badly wrong so there isn’t a right or wrong way as such.

Earlier this week we completed the signing of Ben Thompson from Peterborough. Don't know a great deal about him but has played plenty of football at either League One or in the Championship so hopefully a good sign. Becomes the third Thompson we've signed this summer.

With loans also, I think you can pick decent ones up late on, because once Prem/Champ clubs have done all their business, there’ll be players available that have slipped down the pecking order, but who could more than do a job at this level.

Ainsworth was generally against loans, I think because it can go tits up if you rely too heavily on them and either they get recalled, or if it’s the end of the season they fuck off and you can’t get them back.

I think you can get “no recall” loans now so that takes care of the first problem.

Anyway, I understand we’ll be more open to loans this time round, but I think you can have 5 max in a match day squad, and we need more players than that, having lost quite a few this time round.

However it pans out, our typical starting XI is likely to look very different from last season.

From a trustworthy source? Is he any good?

We’re pretty set at CB but could do with a bit of backup there
Seems to fit Evatt profile young improving plays the right way, Centre half who can double up at right back, another Jones.
Came through at Stoke maybe worth a punt

He'd walk in your team. Suits your style of play and system perfectly. Ball carrying CB who can play left, right or through the middle. Picked up a few niggly injuries last season but I'll put that down to our shambolic pitch. He'd be excellent for you but I'd be gutted to lose him. So much potential but given he's a family friend, I can assure you he's very settled in the area. Would take an extremely good offer to make him go. 500k minimum.

Bold claim. Bodes well if can challenge Johnston and Santos.

I doubt there’s much in the rumour anyway.

Very bold claim to say he’d walk into the second best defence in the league (on paper) last season conceding only 1 less than Ipswich and 36 all season. Can’t see us spending 500k on a centre half anyway even if he is versatile. Think we have other priorities at wing back and in midfield although there are rumours Wrexham want George Johnston so maybe we are planning replacements.

Would only let Forrester go if it was a really good fee, we would be entitled to compo if he leaves at the end of his contract for example anyway.

Has a few errors in him but has a lot of potential. Would want a decent fee and sell on.

How are Pompey fans feeling about their transfer business so far? That's 8 in already for them.

Another signing. Gamble from the aussie league. Kusini jengi. Forward player. Think now we got scully, Whyte and Lane as wingers can afford to have yengi as 4th choice winger/3rd choice forward

Pretty good. Looks like we actually did some planning this time.

It's great to have pretty much a full squad already in place by early July. Gives us time for a proper pre-season and team bonding. Something we've really lacked the last few years and seemed to affect team spirit whenever we hit a rough patch.

Very happy with Whyte and Scully as both have good numbers and attributes to supply Bishop. All the others seem to be bog standard league one players, but I suppose you need that in a squad. Jury is out on Will Norris, but he must have got a move to Wolves and Burnley for a reason. Devlin looks a prospect from Ireland, and Saydee looks a decent backup for Bishop. Yengi could be the next Jamal Lowe if coached right, but at 24 having not had a full season is a tad worrying. If we can get a decent attacking midfielder (leigh from Accrington) and hopefully good young CB (Bernard who's currently away with Jamaica, ex man u youngster on loan here last season) I think it's a very complete squad. I don't think you need a team full of superstars to get promoted from league one, a decent defence and a few match winners.

Chalk and cheese from the chaotic, panic buying, loan heavy Cowley transfer windows.

Only time will tell if the players perform, but there is a clear strategy in what Hughes and Mousinho are trying to do.

Gavin Whyte is a great signing, should definitely be pleased with that one. Not quite made the step up to Championship level but easily one of the better wingers at League 1 level. Much more disciplined in his play the second time we had him, which ruined the fun of watching him a little bit. Still a good player though, would’ve happily had him back.

Rumours of Panutche Camara to Pompey from Ipswich. Injured throughout his time at Ipswich but was apparently quite good for Plymouth before.

Mitch Clark now signed for us on a 2 year deal. Good player if he can keep his off-field stuff in check.

I’m guessing he’s gotten away without a ban as Flitcroft intimated his issues there had been dealt with.

It has been rumoured as he has been training with us for a bit now that he got a suspended ban and Vale were awaiting to see if the FA accepted the outcome which it seems they have.

Good player, fourth spell with us and needs to go and see Funso now and sort that out after getting him sent off! But in all seriousness seems to have grown as a footballer at Accrington and should be a decent addition.

Loved Panutche. All arms, legs and nutmeg. Just never stopped running.

If that’s the case hopefully he accepts how lucky he has been with that outcome and now knuckles down on his career. Should be a brilliant opportunity for him next season to make that RWB spot his own. Good words from Flitcroft on the announcement to addressing the off-field stuff, hopefully Mitch can repay the faith the club has shown.

He has to now really, just need a couple of left backs and 2-3 strikers now and we are done.

Assuming it’s wingbacks we are playing my guess is Conor Grant will be first choice that side and I’m guessing Benning as he’s still at training is staying too as backup just not been announced. At a push Dan Jones can play there or as orthodox left back if we played a back four.

Really the forward areas we need to look at now and maybe one or two loans as required and I think that’s a reasonable core to build from. At least there seems some plan this time as opposed to last season where just stacked it with 7 loans knowing we can’t even use a couple of them on a matchday.

Yeah for sure, if we can get at least one experienced striker in, maybe add someone like Dale Taylor and one more attacker then we’d be there.

So far we look to be improved on last season in the areas we’ve addressed, Worrall going was a blow but Mitch is more athletic and younger so not a bad replacement.

Has to be promotion. Been in L1 for far too long. We have owners who said they wanted to sort the stadium first, which they have done (almost), so now time to fund the pitch.

I expect we’ll make a start on strengthening our squad this week.

Still plenty of time but I reckon we’ll get at least one new face in before our first friendly on Friday.
