I haven't a clue how Stokesey identifies, to be honest it is none of my business, however if I were the captain of a team and someone aimed a homophobic comment at one of my team-mates I would probably react in a similar manner.Tbh I’m surprised Stokes reacted as angry as he did, as firstly he isn’t gay and secondly stuff like that is still very common, pretty sure he’ll have witnessed plenty of ‘banter’ in that vein I certainly do where I work. Also often heard stuff directed at opposition from fans (inc our own) such as the keeper taking it up the arse etc.
Still unacceptable of course but a lot more common and not always as obvious as racism given that there aren’t any openly gay players to insult, more education needed for some I reckon.
I'm not surprised there are no openly gay players in the higher echelons of men's football, where attitudes seem stuck in a different era...which is sad considering how many there are in the women's game, which seems light years ahead of the men's game in that respect and more reflective of society as a whole.
