Is there a limit League 2 players can be sold/bought for?
Matt Grimes went to Swansea for £1.75m in January, similar to Dempsey, though probably better.
And considering he's only 19, and shone so well in such a shite team last season, there's obviously potential.
It's no coincidence a number of Championship clubs were after him for that price.

Probably? Not being funny but you lot are all going to be disappointed if you try and compare the fee we received for Grimes with what you're hoping to get. Matt Grimes was recieving caps for the England u20s and had numerous premier league clubs after him.

Fair enough, not really seen Grimes play bar the recent Toulon tournament.

Still, it's not completely out of the blue for a League 2 player to make a 'big-money' move, wasn't there a Barnet defender being eyed up for close to £1m recently?

I'm probably slightly biased in my opinion, but I think 300k is very low for a player of his quality.

Grimes was a year ahead of Dempsey in terms of professional years when he went, not to mention the fact that Dempsey was being scouted by Premier League clubs last season as well. Dempsey was also playing in a gobshite team around a bunch of nobodies who couldn't string two passes together. As for the England caps, Brad Potts had one and he wasn't half as good as Dempsey - in fact he wasn't very good at all for the most part - so I don't think that says too much.

Having taken a brief look at Grimes' wiki page, it seems like he was in a similair situation to Dempsey last summer but you managed to get an extra 6 months out of him and then get a decent fee. If we hadn't put a release clause in, and if we had owners who didn't get a stiffy at the sight of any fee over a tenner, I think we'd be talking somewhere around £1m for Dempsey even at this early stage in his development.

450k is a huge amount though, Grimes was clearly much better hence the much bigger fee

But obviously you're a better judge of Dempsey's quality and value than fans who've watched him week in week out. Clearly if you don't think he can't be worth more than £450k, he can't be.

Yet in the above post you seemed to be mystified by a League 2 player going for 450k.

In my opinion, Dempsey has all the hallmarks of a player destined to play in the top flight, it may be wrong, but for a 1st year pro he was easily our best player.

That's the problem with buyout clauses really, especially in the lower leagues. The player (agent) will generally dictate the set price and the club will be forced into agreeing or risk losing them for compensation decided at a tribunal. We were lucky with Grimes. There was interest in him last Summer but he decided to sign a new 2 year(?) contract (without a buyout clause) to avoid us getting ripped off. This was huge for us as we were really on the brink at the time.

All I'm saying is since leaving City, Grimes made 3 premier league appearences and was on the bench a further 7-10 times or something like that for a good side like Swansea, keeping players like Leon Britton off the bench towards the end. He's just utter class. Teams and fans will look at him and think ultimately hope their prospects will sell for something similar but it just isn't a comparable example. Either in terms of our negotiation power or his actual ability.

To be fair Huddersfield is a cracking choice of team for him. If he gets the chance he deserves - and I've got no doubt that he'll make sure he works hard enough to earn his chance - then he'll end up in the Premier League in the next few years. There's a reason most of our fans care more about the sell-on clause we've stuck on him - or in this case, probably not stuck on him - than the initial fee.

Grimes has had an extra season of football under his belt compared to Dempsey, so was rightly worth more. Had we held onto Dempsey until January or next summer, and took the stupid buyout clause away, we could have got a million at least.

Dempsey has everything to play in the top flight imo. For his age his physical attributes are incredible before you even look at his ability and technique.

As above he's at the very least held discussions with the club, I think he's going to be our next signing.

Don't know if that was sarcasm or not but if a player had been training with say Rotherham all week and then was going to play for them in a friendly tomorrow I wouldn't exactly be seeing any signs saying he was going to sign for my team.

Do Carlisle fans think he can make the step up to Championship then? Seems to have a strong determind attitude from him interview today.

He's a strong and determined player, so yes. I would say maybe not straight away, but I thought this a year ago about league 2.

So what's Kyle got? Well before you even get on to his undoubted ability, physically he's very good for his age. Some first year pros come into league football and find it tough and get bullied... not Kyle. He can mix it with the biggest and toughest of defenders.
Ability wise he has fast feet, he thinks quick, has good delivery and a decent shot on him.

He'll do well.

Put it this way, I'll be surprised if he doesn't outgrow you within 3 or 4 years. You've got yourself an absolute bargain.

Random stuff from our friendly tonight:

- Shane Lowry has a relegation release clause he intends to activate. Genuinely happy with that.

- Alex Woodyard, Fraser Shaw, Francois Zoko, Connor Essam and Robbie Weir are all believed to have played tonight on trial.

Forget about trials, you should sign him now. Zoko will take the piss in this league.

Good luck to Pearce, had a lot of bad luck with the head injury for us that left him with fluid on the brain and wrecked his confidence...then he collapsed with a mystery illness while at Torquay. I wouldn't want him back but it would've been a shame if his career had gone to shit. He's fairly athletic and that, he's just always too likely to commit a blunder for my liking - his concentration levels are abysmal, saw him for Torquay and he also seemed a lot slower than when we first got him 5 years ago, it was odd - not sure if it's just related to the health problems he's had and that.

He played well for us tonight and his mazy run setup our goal, I would 100% take him now as we will not get any better than him, but we shall see.

Would take Connor Essam as well.

Essam seemed a bang average Conference defender when we had him on loan, although that was a few years ago now and he would only have been about 20 at the time.

Ben Davies will sign for Mansfield IF we contact him before Tuesday. If not he's going to Portsmouth.

He'd be an absolutely quality signing for League 2.

If it was the year 2010. He'll take good free-kicks at least, fuck knows where you'd play him these days as he wasn't even good as a central midfielder for us, and that was in his prime.

I think Zokos problem is he does take the piss, in his attitude. Was one of the many 'bad eggs' Curle brought in

Why is Tuesday so important?

God knows what Davies will be like now. When he left Notts he was our best player, but hrs old and played very little football for 2 years

 - I'm not sure how the poor lad will cope with missing out on his dream move to Luton.

Not sure he said it was a dream move - just stated obvious facts. Move along.

Davies turned down an offer from county

I'd be happy if he signed, not got that experienced player in the middle.

I love a bit of jeopardy in my transfers, personally.

'Where will Adam Murray find a telephone, in Mansfield, before Tuesday?'

He might need to pop over to Nottingham. Or failing that, the wife is on her way down to Pompey herself this afternoon. If the manager is quick about it I'll have a word and she can hand Davies a note.
