Paul McShane, released by Dale at the end of last season, has signed for Manchester United.

Not, sadly, as cover for Harry Maguire, but as a registered overage player and coach for their Under 23s.

Full circle for him, as he started with them as a youngster.

for those new to League Two, this is a level of optimism you rarely see... giddy almost!

Plenty of time in the transfer market to ensure we stay away from trouble.. plenty! You almost never hear that sort of sanguine attitude, that lack of urgency from him when it comes to the annual race to avoid relegation.

Unless you have a huge budget or are like port vale, champions in august, then first priority is always make sure you don’t go down. Then anything else is a bonus.

We’ve had this ownership for 13 years now, no promotions in that time, they’ve relegated us to League 2 and have had a couple of near misses at relegating us again. Can’t take football league status for granted with such dipshits running the show.

The fact of the matter is, back half of last season we showed the form of a team battling to stay in the league. We’ve since lost our best defender so it’s vital we bring in adequate quality to stop that rot setting into this season.
We’ve made some good additions to ensure that, particularly Clough, but we’re still a couple short in my opinion.

Based on the current squad, we fall short. Nombe is probably our best signing so far, but the players we have lost mean we are in deficit.
Its galling when some of our better players like Page feel they can do better at somewhere like Harrogate and the manager has said that players dont want to come down here.
Lots of emphasis on youth players stepping up as usual, and we can still pull it round with two or three signings before the start.
Bookies still have us fourth favourites though, with Bradford.
With respect, we don’t know who is going to be a good signing yet or not. Agree Nombe looks the best but, who knows, Dieng, Brown, Coley etc may end up being fantastic for us.

Re Josh Key, it’d be gutting to lose him. If it’s true that we’re turning down seven figures then it’s only a matter of time. Taylor will still hopefully be able to temp a couple of good players this way, I’ve not yet given up hope on that. This summer’s market is really odd and there will come a point when players will have to start to look at clubs like us, rather than holding out for bigger, more unrealistic, contracts elsewhere.

Hello stranger

We've made some decent signings on paper. Could do with a number 9. We have lots of direct players at the moment, nobody that can hold the ball up.
What’s our midfield and defence like? I can honestly say I’ve never heard of any of them!

We definitely need to add a centre back now. Feeney off injured today, McDonald not even in the squad. That leaves us with one recognised available central defender. Not ideal at all.

We have signed Tom Billson, a young GK from Coventry on loan.

A very important signing as our current GK Rory Watson is the worst in the FL.

We're being loosely linked with Hakeeb Adelakun, Bottega Don. Thoughts? Doesn't seem to have kicked on at Bristol City.

Class player but inconsistent, as is any L1/L2 winger. One of those players which gets you up off your seat though. I think he did okay at Hull but they weren't gutted when he was recalled and he seemed to be in and out of the team. I think if he got a steady run of games he'd be a top winger again in L1.

Should we be afraid?!
Tbh, I don’t like slagging off departing players. But this fella takes the biscuit. His CV led us to expect a minimum of a competent defender. He’ll look solid enough for most of a game but every, and I mean every, game he’ll throw in a couple of horrendous errors.

I thought you were awash with cash this season!

Kevin Ellison signs on as player/coach, pleased with that.

Ffs! When I first saw he signed I thought it was a good signing but to hear what you’ve said makes me annoyed! Taylor said we’d be much stronger this season with a competitive budget but this signing now seems like it’s a bit of a panic signing after losing Lewis Page.

Overall I’ve been happy with our business but I think it’s a case of seeing how they bed in for the first 10-15 games.

Horses for courses, mate. Sheridan turned the entire team to shit last season. Maybe he’ll thrive in a ‘normal’ environment.

Sounds like more of coach/ squad player than a serious contender for the starting eleven.
I really hope Matt Taylor knows what he is doing, because my under is very whelmed

Indeed. All we can do is see how things go. As I said the other day, a few of the more ‘jury’s out’ signings turn out to be excellent for us. There definitely seems to be a move towards playing a slick passing style and hopefully the new pitch will accommodate that.

A lot will hinge on keeping Jay, Randall and Key all season which looks unlikely as one of them will probably be picked up sooner or later. All three are superb and the likes of Nombe, Collins, Coley etc will see us being up there but whether we can go that extra step, I’m not sure.

Funnily enough Moomin but had things been different our centre back pairing could have been Sweeney and Grounds this season. I know ID isnt a fan but I thought generally despite a shocking season Grounds had games where he looked competent. He's slow and prone to mistakes but can play football. (he's played most of his career in the Championship remember) Perhaps in a more confident professional team he may do ok?
