Scott Loach signs, vaguely competent cover for Roy.
Not entirely sure what's happened with Loach. We sold him to Watford, did ok, got an England call up and since then he seems to have had loan after loan, dropped clangers everywhere he's been and is slowly making his way down the leagues.

I'm speechless
£, surely?

Must be. No other reason for it as he could play for a L1 team or a top end L2 team easily.

Feck Boreham Wood? That's a ridiculous signing for them as I really wanted Scott Doe to sign for us......

That must be gutting for daggers. Purely financial move. Have wood got a backer then?

Surely league 1 clubs could match or better Borehamwood's offer.

Unless he just fancies an easy ride and isn't bothered about challenging himself.

to drop that low, there must be more to this one than meets the eye. Can't be just pounds. I was hoping Notts would sign Doe

Impressive work by Cambridge to improve their revenue streams so much they can afford it. Good job that Man Utd money's still sitting untouched and tucked away for a rainy day.

What happened to the FFP rules? They are still in effect this year right?

We're well within the FFP rules. We released most of our squad at the end of the season. We had significant increase in attendances (average jumped from 2,500 to 5100, as well as new sponsors to increase our revenue stream.

It has been questioned on many occasions by our own fans, as well as others if the FA Cup money is being used but the club continue to deny that it isn't. Whether that's true or not who knows. For now, I'm just going to enjoy seeing top players recruited and hope to see that success on the pitch too meaning promotion. Fingers crossed.

One thing that this summer of transfer dealings has shown me is that the division ought to be a lot tougher, and of an increased standard next season. The recruiting that the likes of Pompey, Luton, Notts, Cambridge etc have done really should see all of those teams being better than most of last seasons top 4.

No pressure though folks.

yada yada yada. Seriously, with the exception of Pompey, Luton, Plymouth and Rovers, how many clubs are currently bigger than us in L2? Oxford and Northampton are on a similiar level, but I wouldn't call them bigger. Then there's the likes of Carlisle, who're passing through tough times and consequently have seen a decrease in home attendances.

Pompey, Luton and Oxford have all recruited a lot of players this year. Plymouth and Rovers haven't, either because they think they have a good enough squad in place already, or because they haven't managed to get their identified targets.

edit - having said that, I'm not entirely convinced we, or the others who have brought in several new players, are promotion favourites. A new squad takes time to gel and all that.

Not arrogant at all, just the truth.

But yeah, I would have you on a par with us, but still slightly smaller if you know what I mean ;)

Lower league clubs having a willy waving argument over size does irritate me. At this level everyone apart from Portsmouth would look incredibly small in the second tier regardless of rises in attendances, revenue and all that jazz. Same goes for 80% of League One.

Oxford are definitively a bigger club than Cambridge. Other than that minor quibble, I agree by and large.

I wasn't waving no willy, no way. Just pointing out that "what business we have done this summer" actually translates to "how much we've spent this summer." Whether it's good business or not remains to be seen. If it isn't then it might be very costly if the kitty's all gone.

But if we're getting into it, I'm not sure that the girth of a club that's just spent 10 years in non-league and doesn't own their ground is as massive as suggested.

I don't really care who is bigger than who. As long as we finish in the top 3 or go up via the play off's I couldn't care less.

This thread should be linked to the Non-League Tinpot thread.

Cambridge are nothing more than a jumped up tinpot non-league side. Within 5 years they will be back.

We're turning into Luton, excellent.
In fairness there's usually more shit outside our ground than theirs, we do have a slightly better excuse though.

You know Lge 2 has too many tinpot sides in it when Cambridge are claiming to be a big side in it.

Copying and pasting what I put about Doe in the Conference forum...

I'm just disappointed that he hasn't taken the chance to stay in League Two or move up to League One, even if they may pay him slightly less than what Boreham Wood will be. I understand football is a short life span as a career as I've alluded to, but Doe is still relatively young for a centre-half in the lower leagues and by signing for Boreham Wood, with all due respect, you're hardly putting yourself in the shop window or showing your ambition, are you? Dropping down a league when really at his stage of his career, he should be moving up a league - still, as I say, if it's about the money then I begrudgingly understand.

Maybe I'm biased as a football supporter, but you're talking out of your arse if you think footballers buy into a vision at Eastleigh or Boreham Wood - they're going for the money and the football comes with it (I'm not suggesting the players won't try, of course they will). Moving to Qatar is slightly different than moving to Eastleigh or Boreham Wood, although I understand the point you're trying to make. Although these players that move to those exotic locations for £££ do so at the end of their career.

Players at this level have to think about number one and I totally understand that, but I'm just disappointed that Doe has chosen this route when he could have received more at a bigger club than Dagenham in the same league or above.

As for McClure, I really like that signing. Pretty much confirms to me this season that our aim is to outscore the opposition every much (Yes, I know that's what football is about), but our defence isn't looking half as good as our attack.
