His dad only 2 weeks ago was spouting online that his lad wouldn't be playing league 2 football next season as he was in talks with an Australian club and Livingstone, lo and behold look where he ends up.

Your club certainly haven't done their homework on character reference on the lad that's for sure.
He’s actually come out and distanced himself from his dad and that whatever he puts out are not his opinions. Just have to wait and see

Nothing confirmed yet of course, but seems a good option. Signing League Two players from Crewe and Accrington doesn't exactly make us Man City, but it's nice to see we're finally (after about a decade of gradual decline) looking to spend a few quid to get back to League One where most of us connected with our club think we ought to be. They seem like sensible signings more than anything, and address our main problem from the last 3 years. I wouldn't expect a lot more activity in this direction though, maybe a couple more first XI players and then filling out the squad, but it does seem we've learnt our lesson from last summer and are getting our main targets in early which you do tend to have to pay a little extra to do. Now it's up to the players to perform.

I don’t really understand the ‘finally’ comment because you started spending loads of money initially to get away from relegation, then last summer to get promoted, not like you’ve just started splashing.

I’m sure Gills will get it right eventually, like those signings for you.

It took Mansfield 10 years of splashing the cash to get promoted, these things take time

Silly money? He’s out of contract, do you have any exact figures for me?
Come on, it's not hard to connect the dots. 23 years old, fresh off 17 goals for a mediocre Accy side, has a contract offer on the table from them already. You think Holt is letting him go for anything less than a 6 figure sum? And you think Nolan is turning down L1 offers to stay in L2 for peanuts?

You're rumoured to be paying Nevitt 3k a week, on top of what I'm betting is a generous fee to his agent. You're clearly throwing a lot of money at promotion this season.

We spent more than we wanted to in 22/23 because if we hadn't we were down. Bear in mind for first 5 months of that season our budget was probably somewhere mid level in the National League and it showed on the pitch. I don't think many outside looking in realised how far up shit creek we'd travelled. Spent a few quid to turn the squad into an average League Two squad but let's not pretend that buying Oli Hawkins and Tim Dieng was a sign of outrageous wealth.

Last summer I think we had every intention of spending good money but most of our top striker options went elsewhere and we ended up bargain bin shopping again with Bonne and Nadesan. I think the plan was to invest in January if we were right up the top to strengthen our position, but being nowhere near we didn't go all out in January, just adding a couple as a building process towards this season - Andrews didn't play for three months after signing, he was bought for now.

Now yeah, we appear to be going for it and that's exciting. We don't appear to be going after unrealistic targets, just ones that did well in this league last season which doesn't appear to be a bad strategy. I still don't think signing a free transfer from Crewe and what presumably will be a tribunal set fee for an out of contract guy from Accrington screams of massive overspending personally, but fair enough of you think that.

Gibson probably is L1 class in terms of ability and he did score a hattrick away at Bolton last season.

A good signing for any club at this level as long as he is focused and committed. But your manager will have quite a job on his hands getting him to play well consistently and not be a dickhead.

I feel that he just lost interest and didn't want to be up here anymore.

Armani Little was offered a contract extension but hasn't accepted as yet. Apparently Gillingham's owner is now following him on Twitter. Might be nowt or might be everything.

Meh! Good at times but went missing a lot especially after his injury.

Ok right.

We’re not allowed free transfers from Crewe or Accrington any more.

Margate and Chatham Town it is then

What? Nobody said you could or couldn't sign anyone from anywhere. I'm just stating a clear and indisputable fact, that you're throwing a lot of money at promotion, as these 2 early signings indicate. Nothing wrong with it, been done dozens of times in the past and it'll be done plenty of times into the future. If you got it, flaunt it, as they say.

We've been linked with Callum Johnson and George Lapslie, not sure whether lazy rumours due to David Sharpe link to them both

We’ve so far signed one free transfer. You may have jumped the gun slightly

Allegedly you've offered Nevitt close to 10k per week. Bonkers if true.
That was a Crewe Alex rumour wasn't it posted on OVF?

Nevitt has had one decent season so madness if even half that, that said the fan moaning about Gills offering 3k a week for a striker is eye opening as I would imagine our strikers (lol) are on that and assumed thats about the average.

Gillingham were one of the biggest spenders last season. Because they were shit, everyone forgets.

That's pretty much how I feel as well, it really doesn't seem like a huge outlay in the grand scheme of things. Apparently because we can offer wages that are higher than Crewe and Accrington (with their notorious big wage budgets) we're spending ridiculous sums though, which just is a bizarre take whichever way you look at it.

Nowhere near as big as some. This season we should be for sure, but last year we were probably around 7th or 8th. You're right that we were shite though.

Absolutely no chance you were 7th or 8th. That right back from Swindon we thought we had, you offered him loads more apparently, sources close to our club said your offer was unbelievable. You offered Olaofe more money than us 18 months ago too. You must be spending a fortune.

Callum Johnson is a really good RB at L2 level, good offensively with the odd defensive mistake standard for most L2 players, got released because he kept picking up muscle injuries.

Re Gills considering what they offer Lapslie and Hawkins, them two can’t be the only ones they went silly for. It just did not work out last season.

So now our spend includes players we didn't even sign! Of course we must've spent megabucks on Hutton if you were after him, that must be the only explanation. I don't think we need a lecture from a Stockport County direction about spending money though.

I don’t think lectures are being handed out, it’s just about accepting you’ve been Going For It™️ for a while now and continue to do so, just own it.

The more you try and play it down the higher the wages and transfer fees, we should all know this by now. Hence Why Vale are trying to match the Jamie Vardy to Leicester fee for a non-league player.

As always, the truth probably lays somewhere in the middle.
We must have paid decent wages to lure Lapslie and Hawkins from Mansfield, and again to Hutton to persuade him to come to us rather than Stockport.
I am sure Nevitt is on a decent wage too.
The wages are unlikely to be anywhere near what some on here are suggesting though.
We missed out on a couple of targets because we were outbid.
We are offloading Lapslie, Hawkins and Malone, so that is freeing up a lot room wages wise.
Personally, after 20 years of shopping at Poundland, I am delighted that we are now competing for decent players.
Enjoy the rise chaps and roll on the new season!
