Rumours of Ajose returning on a permanent. Charlton still owe us from his transfer so it's not out of the question.

He'd rip up L2 for goal scoring.

Ajose is far too good for league 2.

Yeah which is my concern as we definitely should be.

Cook and Lee are... well Cook and Lee, not much more to be said there, the others bar Ruddock and McCormack (who is 33 and seems injury prone in recent years himself) are number 10 types not in my opinion suited to playing the wider roles of the diamond. D'ath might did an ok job from what I saw of him last season but it's clearly not his best position.

Smith is as good as gone with Jones making clear that transfer listed players aren't even training with the first team so he shouldn't be a consideration at all.

Then we're getting into total unknowns with Bakinson. Maybe he suddenly leaps into the first team picture but you can't bank on that.

We absolutely need to get another proper box to box midfield type player but like you say with Jones borderline obsession with number 10s (I mean we played Gilliead, pretty much an out and our winger who clearly did not want to play there, in central midfield for a good portion of last season) and his much talked about Cook love affair I'm pretty concerned we won't which is a big big misstep IMO. Even if we do end up playing 352 or whatever those central midfield positions are not good enough.

I very well may be proved wrong (and hope I am in fact) but I'd have much rather spent 250k on a decent midfield player than on Collins (who is undoubtedly a top player for this level) given the make up of our squad and the areas we needed to improve upon based upon last season.

Look away now, Jones has just confirmed we aren't in for any more midfielders:
http://www.bedfordshire-news.co.uk/...mer-spending/story-30418891-detail/story.html

Striker and goalie to come next week and then we are done.

I suspect this means that 3-5-2 will be seen a bit more as Plan A, maybe something like this:

That looks pretty solid to be fair, the issue is if McCormack gets injured (which isn't unlikely with his age/recent injury record) then we are back to looking a bit powder-puff. Or the diamond, something like:
iYbGbod.png

I've put Rea as a defender there but if McCormack was out for any period of time you'd probably slot Rea in as the DM rather than Lee just so we aren't completely lightweight. Or even if McCormack wasn't injured, you could have Rea holding and McCormack on the right of the diamond, that's where Jones played Smith who was a ball-winner, just depends if McCormack still has the legs to get about the pitch as that role is physically demanding.

It's not exactly how I'd like it (would happily trade in Cook for an actual midfielder and Mullins for a more physical, pacier defender to make it perfect - maybe in January we can make those final tweaks) but it's a marked improvement on last season I would say. Losing McGeehan is the only one that arguably weakens us but then he didn't play since early January so not as big a blow as it could have been, and as has been said his all-round game was often lacking even when he was chipping in with loads of goals.

What I really like is that Jones has stuck to his word of more stream-lined squad, there does look to be clear pathways for the three yoof players close to a breakthrough which is great. Also plenty of versatile options - wouldn't be surprised to see Stacey get game time on the right of the diamond for example, obviously Rea can play in midfield or defence, Potts could fill in as the left centre back of a back three if Senior kicks on (which hopefully he will because he is the best crosser of any of the full backs by a distance). If Elliot Lee does sign as rumoured then he can play up top or as the 10 etc. Between the versatile options and the smaller squad it should hopefully mean that no-one is kicking their heels with no game time as we had last season.

I wouldn't say it would totally done - if we get off to an inconsistent start and the midfield is still suspect, it wouldn't surprise me for Jones to try and take on another midfielder prior deadline day.

The squad looks bloody good. If we take on the two that are expected to sign this will be it:

GOALKEEPERS
Marek Stech, James Shea

DEFENDERS
Dan Potts, Johnny Mullins, Scott Cuthbert, Glen Rea, Jack Senior, James Justin, Frankie Musonda, Akin Famewo, Alan Sheehan, Jack Stacey

MIDFIELDERS
Jordan Cook, Pelly Ruddock, Olly Lee, Luke Gambin, Lawson D'Ath, Tyreeq Bakinson, Alan McCormack, Andrew Shinnie, Kevan Cotter

STRIKERS
Danny Hylton, James Collins, Isaac Vassell, Elliot Lee

TRANSFER LIST
Jonathan Smith, Josh McQuoid

According to Darragh MacAnthony, we've offered £30k-£40k for their winger Harry Anderson, who I'm pretty sure they've just given a two year deal to, to get a transfer fee. He's a winger we had on loan for most of last season, but they see him as a right back/wing back and that's only ever going to end one way.

Not sure why MacAnthony has, over the last few months, decided to disclose details of bids from other Clubs all the time.

A day before they signed Marriott, he said they had made no bid...

My views of him would lead me to a court case.

To me, this sounds like a player who has spat his dummy out and has demanded a move so Cambridge are willing to accept a reduced fee in order to maintain some level of squad harmony.
Derry did an interview this week saying how good Berry's attitude is and praising him for how he's been since rejoining the squad for preseason. Plus Berry doesn't seem like a player who would spit his dummy out like that. Probably a 250k release clause in his contract which is something you'd unfortunately expect Cambridge to do.

If he does go then we need to go out and do some great business because Berry is going to leave a massive hole in our team.

I'd be gutted if we're not in for Berry at that price. Right player.

I'd prefer us not to deal with Posh, certainly not with permanent deals, and that's before the whole Keith Alexander and taking half of our team with him back in 2006.

They have very high opinions of average players and seem to be coming across like wanting to be a lower league Chelsea i.e. selling players who are no-where near the first team for silly prices. I think Fry and MacAnthony are forgetting they're a mid-table L1 team.

I prefer us not trading with them either, however when they offer us £450k for a fourth choice striker I'm not going to complain.

I know it's not done yet, but to think that I was laughed at when I said Berry will go for less than 300k.

and oh, I'm not exactly in a great mood, so will people be kind enough and refrain from mentioning the pish, at least for today? Ta.

We've yet to see if the Berry rumours are true but we have a track record of being a soft touch in the transfer market.

Dave Kitson - top Lg1 striker who we sell to a club in our division for £350k. Just before he moves to Stoke for £5.5m we hand over our sell on clause...

Berry - if he moves for this price will be the worst of the lot. Hugely saleable asset that we signed back from Barnsley for ~£100k. After giving Barnsley their sell on fee we'll probably bank about £120k profit.

If it is his minimum fee clause then we've still played this like mugs. Why pay a fee for a talented player, stick him on a 4 year deal and high wages, only to allow him to leave at any point for a negligible fee?

I'll be furious if this is true.
Pardon my giggling...

Hey Abers, would rather he signed for you lot or some other decent L1 club than for Hibs ffs. Having said that, I hear the nightlife in Edinburgh is wicked ;)

Genuinely surprised at the quality of forward players being signed at this level this season! I think that League Two's forward lines in particular are looking very strong at a number of clubs which could see a very competitive Golden Boot race this upcoming season...

Is something going on at Cambridge? Might be selling their best player for less than half what he's worth to them and I saw they withdrew a planning application for the new stadium this week too?

Curtis Good is training with us, Aussie centre back from Newcastle. Played in the A-League and has an Australia cap but doesn't seem to have done much since moving over here.

We've signed someone who's been training with us but can't announce it because whoever deals with the paperwork is off sick - assumed it was Dan Jones but it could be this guy.

The planning application was always likely to not be accepted. Paul Barry has also said he wants to invest more into the club so there's a bunch of rumours that we are trying to buy back the Abbey or redevelop it ourselves.

Berry being sold for less than his value isn't much of a suprise when you look at our Transfer history. Perhaps the money Barry is investing will go towards a replacement but it's more likely going towards facilities.

We've made our first signing in the shape of right back Ryan Jackson from Gillingham, confirming that Richard Brindley has turned down a new deal and will be leaving. If he turns out to be half as good as our last signing from Gillingham then I'm pleased with that.

The 15/16 Jackson was exceptional, the 16/17 (post-injury) version was pretty dire. Needs a fresh start at a lower level. Hope he does well though, the first 6 months he was here was a joy to watch.

Hell of a throw too.

Won't be him, he's only 24 isn't he? Surely can't be one of Nolan's mates.

"Monumental" and "fuck up" spring to mind, assuming the rumour turns to truth. Would be totally disillusioned with the club if this price is correct.

Apparently Berry has a release clause in his contract for 250k which is an absolutely joke.

I believe we signed him for 75k and if we gave Barnsley a sell on fee we will come out of this with next to nothing.

I hope we have a striker lined up if he does decide to move on. Personally I think there is still a chance he would reject it. His bird has a big say in where he goes and they're both from Cambridge. She was at Uni in Leeds when he played for Barnsley and once she finished and wanted to come back home Berry wanted the move back south.

Think its more stupidity than a financial crisis.
