By good beers, I assume you mean real ale? If so then Wigan's one of the best away days in the football league, as there's probably more real ale pubs than houses. With multiple breweries based in Wigan, 5+ I think with them all running at least 1 pub.

For eating there's a lot of fine dining places in the town centre itself, which probably won't be appropriate for your needs, with the good pub grub type places spread out across the borough and more of a need to drive too.

Little Fifteens does food and real ale

Wigan Central - Under the arches by the railway station, quite handy afterwards if you'e waiting for a train as it has a live board of departures on screen.
The Anvil
John Bull Chophouse
The Berkeley
Moon Under Water (Wetherspoon so cheap beer and food)

These are ones I've been quite often and are good and all close by to the station.
There's loads more on that link that are in the town centre but I've never been in them.

Cheers fella.

1,600 sold out for Brentford in the cup Saturday, a superb following considering we only took 248 to Millwall on Boxing Day.

I was being sarcastic.

To be fair, the amount of Coventry fans outside the ground watching through a gate and those in the home ends probably matched the Crewe support.

Worst season in our history last year and we took 1000 odd. We have often sold out the end at Crewe.

I would imagine our trip to your place will be a big day out for many, we really should be selling it out.

Although, the other year we sold the majority of the end and it was only about 3800?

The away attendance quoted that day was correct, as could be seen from the highlights. On the odd occasion your fans sat down there were plenty of seats empty throughout the stand. The highlights just show one small part of the stand with empty seats, it was like that all over.

Mozza - I thought that was a poor following when there was about 200 people behind the goal and then I realised the away end was the packed away end with around 30 seats behind the goal empty. The away end is pretty full and if the stand holds what it is supposed to then I would say that away following was under estimated.

You missed the part of my post where I said "the highlights show one small part of the stand...it was like that all over".

The following wasn't "estimated" in any way shape or form, never mind "under estimated". It was an accurate following. Our Chairman is a Coventry fan, it's not like he would understate the following from the fans he is one of.

The "200" behind the goal you refer to is our bycars end. It used to be the main end for Vale fans until 1999 when the club introduced an additional membership charge to sit there. Fans then moved to the paddock opposite the camera in the highlights, which appears quite full towards the away fans. In addition, the club aren't allowed to sell alcohol in the bycars as there are no parts of the stand to sell alcohol that would be out of sight of the pitch. Another reason why it appears so embarrassingly empty all of the time. Shame really, used to be a great end back in the 90's, generated a really good atmosphere.

Only picture I can find of the end.
Apparently the away following that day was 3100, meaning 1400 empty seats in that stand..

I think a few clubs have taken 'sold out' followings and it being well below 4500. Didn't Sheffield United sell it out the other year?

nah. Wolves did though. Like Mozza said, hard to see how many empties there are when everyone's stood up like in the above pic so it doesn't really go any way to disproving him.

No, we're no Rochdale. Sheff Utd haven't sold it out. They brought a few last boxing day but it was about 2,800 I think. The first few rows were netted off. That picture, (despite being deceiving with everyone standing up) shows clear areas at the front with empty seats. When they sat down, there were plenty more. Great following still, but no more than 3,100 as reported.

I could see it being a pretty heated atmosphere due to both sets of fans being so close to each other.

And we won't be outnumbered either, so again I don't see how we've thrown home advantage
Whether you've thrown home advantage or not isn't the point.

To be fair,it probably didn't even come close. Twenty or thirty peering through the gate and perhaps 100 scattered across our main stand still comes nowhere near outnumbering us.
