Root seems to have got in his head lately that he needs to be able to smash it. I don't think he does, he's class enough that just by playing his own game, proper cricket shots, minimising the dot balls, he'll go at a good enough rate. Especially with the amount of power hitters we've got at the other end. We saw that against SA at the World T20.

It's in trying to hard to hit the big shots he gets bogged down and that's what started the downfall today. We were going fine at 12 overs for 113-2.

Doesn't excuse how the rest fell apart afterwards though

Never understand the furore at a collapse in T20. The manner of it was terribleasy but I'm sure they all went out there with the mindset of having to whack 15+ an over which provides some context.

Still a shame they've lost that series as it's hard to argue theres more shorter forM talent in that England side than India's.

So Cook is stepping down - right move to give Root the chance to settle into the role before the Ashes?

Roy and Billings putting in good showings in the PSL. Billings hitting 78 n.o in a successful chase yesterday, hopefully he cements a place in the England LO sides.

Meanwhile, KP is a sitting duck.

Anyone else really just bored with KP after his comments today? Talking about how its a slap in the face to test cricket how a T20 specialist is one of the richest English players and that test cricket is falling behind. On this point, England can't afford to pay test players what players are making in the IPL, if Mills bowls 4 overs in every game he's almost making £3500 per ball bowled.

While he talks about how he likes young players are benefiting from it he said 'I embraced [T20] eight years ago and it's what caused me my P45', seems a fair amount of jealousy and resentment is still there that he couldn't get the riches of the IPL and be everything with England as if it was the sole cause of why he no longer played for England.

I like the potential stipulation of any team touring England must play a test against Ireland as well.

Kevin Peterson seems to lack some self-awareness.

See Stokes is the highest paid player in the IPL, that alone outlines his quality and class. I love the man. Would have been my England captain over Root

Pretty solid all round display with Morgan leading the way and Woakes/Plunkett getting the wickets mainly.

India getting absolutely pasted by Australia, 8-50 for Lyon.

They still managed to win the test though after bowling the Aussies out for 112 when the latter needed 188 to win.

Ashwin with 6 wickets.

If you were ever building a case against Test cricket - that India/Australia match would be the key piece of evidence

The final day wasn't bad viewing, wouldn't have wanted to watch the previous four though.

Aussies batted very well tbf, Marsh and Handscomb were excellent. We'd have lost that game.

See Bangladesh won their 100th Test in Colombo the other day as well. Could be a sign of a changing of the guard, they're an improving side and Sri Lanka are a shadow of their former selves

City based franchises, I'd be for it as long as smaller counties don't suffer as a result, ie Somerset sell out every home game atm and are one of few counties to actually turn a profit but would be unlikely to feature in franchise cricket. A smaller county comp being run and profit sharing between the counties from the franchise league would be required imo.

I personally feel the T20 groups atm are boring, over 12-16 games or whatever it is, you can lose 3/4 in a row and be in contention. I'd say having 2 groups where you only play each opposition once and then heading into 1/4 finals would be better, would mean each game counts for more and stakes are higher in each game. Change 4 day cricket to 3 divisions of 6 and the reduction of cricket played from these two changes would create more than enough time for a franchise round robin style competition.

Looks like Warickshire were ahead of the curve when they renamed their T20 side Birmingham Bears. Still dont see how this will affect the T20 bash.

Just taken at look at the RL Cup fixtures and they're all during the week pretty much. Wtf! I normally try to catch a couple of the Gloucestershire games, but I'm gonna have to take time off work if I want to watch them now. The only game I'll do that is the Somerset game.

Anyone know why they've changed it?

How lovely to see Misbah on Younis on the cricketers of the year list but how the heck has Younis never been selected until now?

Some very one sided matches in D2. Glamorgan stuffed by and innings, Leics almost by an innings and Kent thrashing Gloucs :bg:
