I hate overthinking. I do it far too often and mostly at night before trying to nod off. It hasn't got to the point where it prevents me from sleeping, but still irritating. It's always over the most silly things that most wouldn't think twice about. I'd imagine a lot of people are the same.

Can definitely sympathize with all you non-sleepers. I often find that I'll struggle to get to sleep when I know I have to be up early the next day... if I have an early start, I just know I won't get to sleep until 3am or gone. I don't even try, now. Example? I have work at 6:45am tomorrow. I'm on here now just gone midnight, and now I intend to go and watch some TV for an hour or two. It does mean I'll be a bit tired tomorrow, but as I'm off the day after I know that I'll be able to get to bed early and make up for it.

But yeah, about 3 hours sleep is probably average for my amount of sleep for early starts. Most of the time I seem to be fine with that much sleep, but not always.

Not quite the same but along the same lines, I can never sleep while traveling either, which pisses me off as well. When I went to Dubai I was up at 8am the day before (and as I said in the above, I don't tend to sleep well for early starts anyway...) and got a bus from Plymouth to Heathrow at midnight, assuming I'd sleep on the bus for the 5 hour or so journey... nope. My fight the next day was at about 9:15am and it's a 7 and a half hour flight... couldn't sleep on all of that either, despite the fact that I'd been up for 25 and a half hours when I first got on the plane.

By the time I arrived in my hotel I'd been up for about 34/35 hours... :o

I'm not an insomniac, I just can't sleep earlier than about 2am physically. Even when I had 9am exams or before I could drive and caught a bus and train to work at around 7.20am to arrive for 9am. I don't think i've gone to sleep earlier than 1am since I was at school.

Still awake. My eyes want to sleep but everytime I close them I'm just thinking about shit that doesn't matter.

I've just watched a 20 minute video on YouTube of a man trying to hunt a deer with a bow and arrow. He hit it...but it ran away and he spent 3 days looking for it. Dick.

I go through phases like that. Currently doing it now. Work dried up about 2 weeks ago so not had much on so been having a few late nights and generally sleeping my days away. I hate it, but I get into bed and worry about the work situation but thankfully got some decent news earlier today and have something the week after next so hopefully they have enough work on to keep me going.

I've always been a person who gets up quite early, like 7.30/8am when I'm off work but just lately after staying up till 4/5am I've not been getting up until between 2/3pm!

I get this, even when i am working. Just wake up minimum 3 times a night.
If i go to bed earlier i just wake up earlier as well so it's not like i can just sleep a bit more.
Last time i genuinely remember not waking up a few times in the night is when i worked from 6am until 9.30pm with just eating breakfast, and it KO'd me for the night.

Getting to sleep is one of my personal crowning glories as a human being. Early this week I had nightmares three nights in a row which is probably my worst going for a good ten years. I'm honestly quite smug that I can just find a soft, quiet place and sleep in it. Dragging myself from a computer/book can be another matter though. My top tips are that you shouldn't be arsed enough to even consider thinking before you go to bed, and to (as the saying goes) not let the sun go down on your grievances: find someone or some way to get a personal problem off your back and if you've just read summat depressing, read summat reliably light and funny to counterbalance it before turning in. Works a charm.

The only time I've gone full insomniac in several years was last year on my birthday when I'd a friend use the floor in my room. His BO was so godawful that it was impossible for me to shut my brain off from it. Then I had a long away day in the morning and we bloody lost.

Maybe someone should start an insomnia thread.

Not me though, 'cos I'm not a weirdo like you lot. I can sleep.

Well going by this thread you're the weird one that can go to sleep. ;)

I always struggled to sleep properly, and still do go through periods of it. I found just accepting that I won't sleep and working through whatever it is that I'm thinking about removes some of the pressure. I know I can work on a few hours sleep so it doesn't matter and Sometimes I even enjoy it a little bit. A lot of my better ideas come at this time.

That doesn't always work, but at least I remove the pressure of getting to sleep which is one of the main barriers I think.

I have to be up at six am for work on a Friday, so last night I dropped off about 10 and woke up at 1am. I didn't get back to sleep, but luckily I am home again now so I can get a few hours in.

I think using my phone in bed is one of the worst things I do. I should probably get a alarm clock and leave my phone in the front room over night.

I used to be like you guys but now that I'm in my late 20s I almost always need a siesta when I'm in my flat all afternoon with nothing to look forward to till 8pm. I just love those naps. I do have a pacemaker though so my heart can keep up with my brilliant brain and so I either need coffee to keep myself going or I just take a siesta. They're great.

I still hate hr. Still haven't got a reply from a company and they said they'd reply before the end of the week. And the Germans are basically on a weekend like right now!

Same as this and I've got so used to getting up for work for 9/10 that even on weekends I can't sleep for more than six/seven hours, I'm constantly falling deeper and deeper into a sleep deficit. I also find it impossible to sleep if I have anything really important the next day - it used to be exams, now it's more like job interviews, having to catch early flights/travel, important work stuff. University ruined my ability to sleep normally.

Though my problems seem like a bed of roses compared to real insomniacs. I wish I was able to nap, but they just make me feel awful/groggy for the rest of the day.

You lot tried lavender? That apparently works a treat. Bubble bath or a scent thing on a pillow/near the bed.

Personally, I can watch TV/be on my laptop, turn if off and be asleep in 10 minutes.

Yeah I hate naps, I can never understand how on Holiday and that how anyone can go for a nap after 6/7 pints ready for the night out. I did it once and ended up fetching a Kebab and had an early night!

Napping is ideal as long as you don't sleep for too long. 20-30 minutes is fine for me. Any longer and I feel awful.

I can go to bed wide awake and be asleep within 10 minutes. I used to be terrible for going to bed and watching TV in bed but I rarely do that now as I feel I sleep better without it. It's really relaxing going to bed and taking in the peace and quiet of what is usually a very busy/noisy house.

Try eating something carb based, like wholemeal bread or summit. Carbs boost tryptophan which is fundamental in making you feel sleepy. Smoking a pure blunt can only help too.

I'm ridiculously good at sleeping. I'm the kinda guy who can sleep for 12 hours straight, wake up, empty my bladder and pull off another 4hours kip no problem. Then again I have anemia and smoke bud regularly, which assists the whole sleepyness thing.

Whatever you do, avoid sleeping tablets. Shit is addictive.

Its always 8 at night for me, then I close my eyes for 15 mins and feel refreshed for the remainder of the night - maybe thats a reason I take so long to get over sometimes!

Had 8 phonecalls today from an 08xx number; the first was before 8 this morning and I was only in my bed 3 hours! The second went soon after and rang for ages so I got up to check the number out as I said yesterday I have a parent in hospital and it could be them ringing. I find out its that 08xx number so I put the phone on do not disturb, get up for 1, find out I've had 5 more of the bloody calls then later as I leave the house the phone goes again, and its an automated message from DHL, telling me of a delivery! I haven't ordered anything up and it says that there will be an import charge of £18 as well for it! Who ever it is can get tae fuck!

My general day in terms of tiredness tends to go:

6am-mid day: NOOOO I'M TIRED MUST GO BACK TO SLEEP.
Mid day-10pm: Still tired. Blergh.
10pm-6am: I feel like I've just had caffeine injected directly into my heart! I could stay up for DAYS!

Time is just a number to me. I sleep when I'm tired, like a boss

In all honesty though, my body clock over the past couple years has been constantly changing depending on my latest routine. Recently though I've been smokin alot of bud, which is helping to get me to sleep at reasonable times i.e. 5-6am.

I've had phases where I slept once every two days - absolutely batters your mind and body after a while o_O

Twas worth it at the time :£

By the sounds of it i should bump 'proficient (but not excessive) at sleeping' up to somewhere near the top of my cv. the secret is to not use electronics in the bedroom. i dont even take my phone in there with me. i also often have 30 minute naps if i'm feeling a bit tired, but never after 4pm.

hehe. nothing with the internet, then. for anyone who really is suffering to sleep though and looking for suggestions, i would recommend clean bed sheets, a luke warm shower and audio books in a foreign language. try to pay attention as much as possible and you'll be asleep before you c... zzz
