Shit. Just seen this, sorry to hear mate. Fucking awful.

The worst kept secret since..... The holocaust?

Is that in bad taste? I'll go now. :gmc:

"Worst kept secret since bride's infidelities."

If you can't think of anything nasty just be nice and tell a few gags, In my best man speech I opened with: "They say the key to a great best man's speech is for it to last as long as the groom does in bed, so thank you for lisening and please raise your glasses to the happy couple."

Doesn't everyone?

The thing is, as much as I dislike him, I actually respect him.

Enzo Ferrari started producing the beautiful road cars we associate with Ferrari today purely to fund the racing. In a time of virtually no driver safety (as we know today) he insisted his drivers be prepared to risk their lives to win the races.

That era is long gone and while there is obviously huge risks in F1, the risk of death is significantly reduced (which is obviously a good thing). However, for all the "calculated" (my term) racers like Schumacher, button and rosberg (who are all quality drivers), there are drivers who will risk that extra inch and Hamilton is one of them. Alonso is the other. These two are widely regarded as THE drivers of this generation. And rightly so.

Lewis is genuinely a great driver who is prepared to risk everything to win. I massively respect his skill but am sick to death of being told he's a "playboy" and leads a "party lifestyle" in every article. Anything you read about him these days stinks of a PR person in the background asking "did you mention he was at the Rio
Carnival with Rihanna yet"?

F1 is properly stale at the moment. Its desperate to get rid of the robot image all the modern day drivers have. There are no "characters" in the sport and the races are a procession of the same teams finishing in much the same positions in the same races.

F1 needs another James Hunt. A David Beckham figure who can win a race on a Sunday and be photographed falling out of a club with 3 "stunners" on a Monday morning.

Every Hamilton piece tries to convince the reader that he's that guy and it's not remotely convincing. He has no charisma, no wit and importantly, no charm.

To counter this, his team leak a constant barage of stories about a fictional rebel in a race car. This guys is genuinely talented but its not rock and roll to keep telling people you're rock and roll. Lewis Hamilton is not even remotely rock and roll.

And stupid hair.

But agreed. If F1's future depends on it convincing people Hamilton is some sort of playboy maverick then it's fucked.

Hospitals, awful places. I've been in Chesterfield Royal for the past few days, and whilst the morphine is making me look and feel reasonably ok, I'm on a ward with some really terminal looking people. It's horribly sad. Proper vegetative states. I'd hate to imagine any of my loved ones like that. Can't wait to be allowed to go home.

Why would we not remember those who who fell in battles from WWI to Afghanistan and Iraq? Those that fought and died did so that we would never have to fight in wars ourselves, anyone who despises those servicemen/women who died protecting us civilians especially the likes of Corbyn should hang their heads in shame.

People fought for various reasons, mate. Most people because they were drafted. I also don't think anyone 'despises those servicemen/servicewomen'. There is a genuine critique of the poppy as a symbol that shouldn't be dismissed just because it doesn't fit into a narrative that sentimentalises that period of history.

Look at one of the lead stories on the news tonight, the FA and SFA lobbying FIFA to wear poppies when we play next week. It's tiresome that we have to put up with this farce every year.

As much as i like you mate i can't agree with your view on wearing a poppy to remember those who died in battle to protect us something i wouldn't have the balls to do and that's why i gladly remember those that were braver than i could ever be.

We need to move on from this; by all means support the British Legion and the good stuff they do, but this demanding we have to wear them or we aren't patriots or insulting those that fought is just bullshit.

Aye FIFA are dickheads but they state they don't approve of any national team brings politics into football and this is politics the way the poppy is being used currently. They'll fold and we'll be allowed to wear them as I think the same thing happened last year, but we also shouldn't be up in arms about this which we are.

Where have i said we should wear them? I Believe we all have a choice in what we support and what we fight against as it's our choice living in a democratic country but please don't think bad of the millions of people who will want to pay their respects to those brave people who fought against oppression and dictatorship even though the majority were called up rather than freely enlisting.

I don't think bad of people who wear poppies, my mum wears one every year, it just seems in the last decade there has been a furore when people don't wear them like McLean or a newsreader on the telly opts not to. It was never like this 20 years back.

Channel 4 Newsreader John Snow refuses to wear one every year but i don't think the less of him for it, it's his choice and i respect that but what i despise is people slagging me off for wearing a poppy. I have a few very good reasons for wearing one that is my own business which i won't bore you with on here.

That'll be the same James McLean that turns his back when the National Anthem is being played. Sensitive soul wee Jamsie....

It has moved on from that to politics undoubtedly.

Jon Snow is the main anchor on Channel 4 news, and as such can be bold enough to do it without reproach from his bosses. I very much doubt the lesser newsreaders are afforded the same freedom of choice in that regard.

McLeans reasons for not wearing it may be flawed, but it is his right to, and he should'nt need to answer about it every time he does it or be castigated for not wearing one, which he does get.

Only those who disagree with the wearing of the poppy now attempt to categorize it as a symbol of political play instead of it's true reason which is a mark of respect.

Of course McLean has the right to decide to wear or not wear but whatever he chooses to do or not to do is fair game for criticism. He can give a reason for not wearing one then in the same instance he is NOT immune to criticism mate.

We didn't feel the need to wear them years ago, why is the constant clamour there to wear them now, and the accusations of shame from those that choose not to?

Poppy Day in NZ is the 25th of April to remember Anzac Day which is widely respected on these shores, I buy my one from one of the many poppy day sellers which are usually organised by the RSA (Returned Services' Association) - the equivalent of the British Legion - and I also buy another poppy a few weeks before Remembrance Day and wear that with pride and grateful thanks to those who served and gave their lives in the two world wars, my Dad in WW2 who served in the Royal Navy and my Granddad who was badly wounded going 'over the top' at the Somme.
