Yeah, he was stressed and his back hurt the poor kitten.

Unprofessional cnut. My opinion of him has taken a big nosedive in the last 2-3 weeks, I've got no time for players who throw a strop and pretend they're injured to avoid playing and training because they want a move. I've no problem with a player putting in a transfer request, as long as they act professionally if it's refused. Coutinho hasn't.

Regardless, I still hope he puts in a good shift this season (after apologising) then we get rid next summer but we won't get what we were already offered.
Aye I've gone right off him also tbh. Heard that he was supposed to be around in the stands to watch the Hoffenheim game, but didn't show up and no one could get ahold of him for two days afterwards as well.

Fair enough if he wanted to leave, but he's took iffy advice from his agent, Barca and his family it seems, and went about things poorly. Its one thing to push for move elsewhere, but the lack of class he's shown, shows him in poor light and lack of character. Liverpool bought him and brought him on to begin to fulfil his potential these last few years, and to repay them by these shenanigans is crass.

Anyway, he needs to get over it, knuckle down and work hard to make sure he's in the world cup squad for next season which he'll only get by playing games for us, and if he does the business it'll work out for all concerned. Pretty sure he'll be moved on quickly next summer though after all this.

Surely we don't pay his wages if he just goes AWOL?

If he didn't make himself available for the Liverpool medical team to confirm the "injury" was genuine then I would presume that would be the case.

Football clubs literally buy and sell human beings and then be all like 'muh due respect'. The psychic economy of the transfer window is so weird.

How much would Liverpool have made out of Coutinho if they'd have played their hand a just a little more modestly?

I get that and I'm not saying clubs don't treat players unfairly in certain instances, but Liverpool saw a talent in him when he was at Inter, gave him the chance to shine, and he took it, and the last three years he's kicked on, and was happy to sign a £200k/week deal in January tying him to the club for another five years; if he was so unhappy surely he wouldn't have done that if he knew Barca would be sniffing around him (and I'm sure he'd have been in touch with Neymar his best bud to see if there was interest).

If he plays at the level needed and which he is beginning to consistently do, he'll get his move, particularly with us bringing in Keita, just not when he wanted it.

Do you not fear your cutting off your nose to spite your face? Small clubs like Swansea & Liverpool survive on buying players with potential before selling them on for a profit. With these tactics you'll be lucky to sign another Suarez or Coutinho because they know you'll play silly beggers when they wish to move onto bigger & better things. Good players will start swerving you and you'll just be left with the Henderson's of this world. Pretty dumb policy if you ask me.

You can, and you have, as with all football clubs, sell or else drop players on a whim when you are done with them. The system provides for Liverpool in the sense that you now have total control over Coutinho and could ruin the rest of his career if selling him wouldn't be such a big benefit to you financially. I'm struggling to find the moral case for Liverpool FC here, or indeed any club, tbh.

I think what's really annoying is that Coutinho has broken the illusion of being a Liverpool boy (even if you knew deep down that wasn't true) and the economic relationship that was driving the whole process has been exposed in all its ugliness. That is the driving logic of organised professional football isn't it. It's gross and upsetting.

Only a fucking idiot would have believed that at any point. Putting fantasy aside, what is actually annoying is that he has acted in a profoundly unprofessional manner simply because he wasn't getting his own way, namely a move to another club that Liverpool were under no obligation to go along with. We have played 5 competitive games this season, and he has effectively taken himself out of selection in all of them.

i'm not on a wind up mate

I wasn't referring to you.

Indeed, you don't hear a pip out of him for three years, he looked settled, but the first thing he publicly does is act like this? Well he's shown at least he is weak-willed and selfish, so thats something we know about him now.

You were the most vocal Liverpool fan on here in regards to Van Dijk and us though?

We should just ban Coutinho from entering Anfield and Melwood, freeze all of his payments, and remove him from any training until he apologizes.

All Van Dijk did was hand in a transfer request though, no? He was then shunted to train on his own and put on the naughty step for doing so. We were quite willing to keep Coutinho playing with the side whilst all this was going on.

So we put our best player in the Under-18s just because he handed in a transfer request?

If he was happy to play for us VvD would have. Simple as. You also remember VvD held private talks with Klopp in Blackpool, which broke in June right?

There should be an element of understanding with regards to Coutinho. I'm sure he'd have remained more professional if Barca were lowballing for him, but when fees far in advance of what is reasonable are being put forward there will be a part of you that decides 'fuck you' to your club.
Mahrez has been very professional after handing in his request, and I'm sure he'd have liked to join Roma, but they lowballed it. If they'd gone mental and offered 75mill for him and we refused to sell I'm sure his conduct would gave been different.
Alternatively theres Drinkwater who had renained tight lipped since rumours of a Chelsea move surfaced, but he also conveniently had a back injury as soon as Chelsea made an initial approach. However it would be very naive to believe those things are 100% down to the players. If the club are willing to sell at some point it's in their interests to not play them as well. Maybe Cout thought Liverpool would see sense and not try posturing in the face of obscene offers.

This window has been mental with the amount of money flying around on transfers for all types of players, with some (Sigurdsson as an example) being scandalous. It has seen a paradigm shift back to club power away from the players, when the likes of Southampton - a league one club until recently - can keep a defender who clubs would pay £60 mill+ on.

I daresay thats largely in part due to the club involved and manner in which he was approached.

Nope, he lied about being injured and was on strike so he can't do jack shit.
We might put him playing in the reserves for the next 5 years and when he is 30 Barca can get him for free (he has also gained 6 stones in weight during that time).

As stated before in this thread when that absurd suggestion was made you cannot actually do that and the player can rescind his contract.
But y'know, good luck if your club is actually stupid enough to do that.

Not fishing HarvSFC just being honest. It says something about where the game has went when yourself and a little club like Swansea can hold bigger clubs to ransom when they come calling for your players. :)
