Only reported in The Sun, I'd take it with a heap of salt!
Exactly the type of player Newcastle won't be after. I would imagine if they're going to spend money at this level, it'll be on young players who could make an impact in the division above in the future (Cook / Mowatt / Gray / Dembele etc)

To be honest I expect Newcastle will just want to bring in players who will get them back up then they can spend whatever when back in the premier league, by all accounts with M'boro and with us Tomlin has been a big success in the championship and could help teams pushing at the top end.

Fulham open the rumour account for what I expect to be a Championship scramble for Glenn Murray this summer.

I was very excited when we signed him a year ago, a proven goalscorer. And tbf, his goal per minutes ratio is good. But he's suffered in a similar way to Tomlin, in that
a) he expected to be first choice and got upset when it turned out he was one of a competitive squad
b) we've come to learn that we can't get away with many players who aren't ridiculously quick, no matter how talented

If Wilbraham hadn't extended his contract I'd have said Murray would have been an excellent player for us to go after, however if we're likely to have 4 strikers I don't think having two over the age of 32 is the way for us to go.

Nah - Ashley wouldn't spend money on anyone unless he got good resale on them. Last time Newcastle came down they only signed one player for a fee IIRC, Mike Williamson for £1m. Other than that they just kept what they had.

Since then, he's only spent money on young players who he thinks he'll get more for in the future. Hence why the players we bought last year were Mbemba (20), Mitrovic (20), Thauvin (22), Shelvey (23), Townsend (24) and Wijnaldum (24). I imagine to get Rafa to stay he'll give him a kitty, but it'll still need to be spent on young players.

Also, the reason we've gone down this year is because of bad characters in the dressing room, they won't be in a hurry to throw Tomlin into that mix.

The reason they went down was Steve McClaren, he's not there anymore.

We're apparently signing Adam Webster from Portsmouth. Matt Clarke most likely going the other way.

I'm confused by this, especially as we're supposedly paying £400k! Clarke has been mentioned in next years plans so regularly

Marcus Maddison linked to Ipswich. Would be an excellent signing but I can't see them stumping up the kind of money we would want for him.

Josh Brownhill to Bristol City keeps popping up.
Nixon has said it's "likely" apparently, so it must be true.

Lee Johnson signed him on loan for Barnsley last season, so there may well actually be something in it.

Decent enough technically, but lacking in a couple of key areas. He's been offered a new contract at ours, but realistically he's competing with about 4 players who are probably all ahead of him in the pecking order nowadays.

Still incredibly young though, so there's scope for vast improvement, but would need playing regularly I feel.

Decent little young player with potential, basically.

Lots of rumours that Adam Hammill is heading our way as well. Pre-contract agreement already signed by all accounts.
I will believe it when I see him sat in the stands at the Gate holding a shirt.
The player I would like from Barnsley is Mawson, very impressive defender and a 'leftie' as well, just what we need to go alongside Flinty.

Him and Hammill are the names that keep popping up. Both seem feasible and would be worth a go given they're both OOC.

Edit - beaten to it by Ciderup!

Wigan, Brighton and Sheffield Wednesday after Lee Gregory, apparently.

If true, I imagine Sheff Weds' interest is contingent upon their league status next season.

Where does he play? And what kind of money do you think he would cost?

He sounds like exactly tye sort of player we're looking for, but I can't see us spending that kind of money unfortunately.

That'd be a strange one if true, done really well this season although he did struggle in the Championship last season albeit in a poor side. Probably worth a gamble if the price is decent.

If the link is genuine, and after the Dack situation in January, the club would have already known they'd have to pay a lot! Hopefully this is the start of change in apporach?

Anywhere is an advanced midfield position. Great on either wing or as a 10.

I reckon we'd want at least 3 million, probably more knowing MacAnthony.

I love your think, and have heard great things about the lad... but I wouldn't hold your breath!

Latest update from our end is we want Hourihane from Barnsley. That was from the Sun. Apparently "near the top of the list" targets wise. I'd be fairly happy with that, one thing we desperately need is a good set piece taker. I fear for Barnsley if they lose to Millwall based on the rumours going around. They'll be set to lose half their team if they get beat. Hammill, Brownhill, Hourihane, Isgrove, Fletcher and Winnall will all be off to Championship clubs I reckon.

Isgrove's in the final year of his contract here too, so could be picked up quite cheap.

Add one more to the list - Alfie Mawson. Local rag reporting that we're set to bid £500k for him.

Mawson looks decent to be fair and is a leftie so it does fit.
Personally, I reckon we should be leaving Barnsley alone until after their play off final but that's probably just me.

I wouldn't be disappointed with Mawson at all. He's arguably the best centre half in L1 at 22 years of age - £500k would be an absolute steal.

It's the same job for the boys mentality that caused problems in the past.
So Mark Ashton structure is to use Johnson to raid Barnsley

Great!!!!
