Last summer none of our fans ever knew till pen was put to paper. Don't think Gray, or Jota were really mentioned before they signed.

We only tend to find out this summer because it comes out in the foreign press. The guys in charge at Brentford are very quiet about their business.

Doing it quietly is the best way to do it.
Bristol City let everyone know about Gayle and that's blown up in their face and now everyone knows they have money to burn :£

I think we take the prize for quietest club doing business.

No one know who's going to sign. Pickford and Keane were complete suprises.

Vermijl and Cunningham were pretty common knowledge though, as was Darikwa before Burnley offered him a better deal.

Grayson did say we haven't paid a fee for anyone this summer but I can't see why Bristol City would let Cunningham go for nothing, I imagine the fee was on the low side though. He probably just had a Yorkshire moment in that interview.

What I would say is that it would be hilarious if Gray turns them down. Not necessarily poking fun at BCFC, but them making an outrageous offer, close to the end of the window, and us accepting the offer due to its worth and probably making moves on new players in the meantime. Then for the player to go and gazump the whole thing would be pretty funny!

You're missing the point. His agent clearly declared the info to drum up interest for Gayle, that's what he wanted out of it.

Fair enough, I just heard Cotterill on about and thought he'd let it out the bag.

It would be more of a relief than hilarious

Yeah spending no fees seems to be impossible in this league.

We found out about Cunningham and Vermilj from City and Wednesdays newspaper articles didn't we? I can't remeber

I really like Andre Gray and have belief that he will significantly improve over the next few years, whether with us or you guys, but given our recent outrageous ability to uncover talented players on the cheap, I'm extremely excited and confident about the club spending the Gray transfer monies.

I mean it would be a relief for us, well it would for me anyway.

This is absolutely unbelieveable. Never in a million years did I think we'd get anywhere near that amount for a sell on. £1.7m! For a player we paid £30,000 for.

There were certain people on the non league section saying we wouldn't get £250,000 for him! And this "he wasn't that good."

Personally I don't think Bristol City will make a profit on him.

Do you happen to know how much the % sell-on is?

20% of any profit over £600,000 which we received last summer.

The interesting thing about FFP is that we can seemingly apply these funds into our 2014/2015 FFP status if we want, or we can spend them as part of our 2015/2016 FFP budget.

So, if Bristol City do sign him, just what do you (City fans) expect to be the outcome.

For that price he should be in a team heading for the POs - minimum. If all he does is keep you in the Championship would that be money well spent?

One player will not get a team promoted. You'd have to fork out a similar amount, or more, to even have a team getting a sniff of the POs.

Yeah, quite obviously.

If we sign him for £9m, I'd hope we have another £9m lined up for a left back, central midfielder and centre back.

Read OTIB, City fans seem to have gotten carried away by the Gayle and Gray news, I don't consider any transfer of £9m 'worth it' or 'well spent' unless we were to be promoted this season, even so it would have been a massive risk which we'd have gotten lucky with. Lansdown said last time he got carried away as a fan with how much he was investing, I'm worried its happening again with the bright lights of the premier league just 1 promotion away. Our attitude last season in league 1 was very sensible.

Which in itself is ridiculous for a club at this level to spend over £20m in one window.

Serves us right for leaving it so ridiculously late to start offering some decent money.

Still plenty out there imo

Hooper is allowed to leave on loan for anyone who can cover the wages it seems, £1.7m for the season. Adam Forshaw is sat on the bench at Boro, signed for them for about £2m plus add ons it seems. So you're looking maybe £4m-£5m for those 2, for the extra £4m on Gray's fee alone how many championship clubs do we think would reject that much for a CB?

There are still potentially so many good deals out there, I'm not saying the above would move to us or anything but I would find it preferable to spending £9m on Gray then trying to strengthen other areas.

Apart from Gayle and Gray you generally wouldn't find a club that does business quieter than us. The only players we've ever signed that weren't undisclosed were Maynard (record signing) and Kodjia (due to currency exchange).

To be fair I remember you guys tapping up Michael McIndoe from us, and he eventually said he left Wolves because he was going to a bigger club with bigger expectations in Bristol City.

To be fair you did us a favour, the arrogant twat had one good season and thought he was Messi, now he's hiding from the authorities in his Mum's flat up in Scotland.

One way to put the £9m for Gray into perspective, is the total transfer fees we have received in the last 23 years only total £17m, and almost £6m of that has been collected this summer.

Even if we don't sell Gray, we have effectively broken even on transfers 2 years in a row while still building a much better team than the one that came up from League 1. As toshj says, if we had another £9m to spend with our scouting network, we could sign some real gems.

How could we turn down 8M for Gray? We're not willingly letting him go, the fact we're holding out for so much and that we've already rejected a load of big bids for him shows how much we want to keep him. Odubajo had a release clause so there was nothing we could do if someone bid that amount for him. Dallas is the only one that could be argued we have let go a little bit easy but if you look at the facts 1.25 million for a squad player (albeit a very good one) is good money.

Very true. Be interesting to see how you replace them.

I think the worst part of this for Bristol City, isn't the fact they are paying £9m for him, but the fact that every other club now knows how much they have to spend and are willing to spend. Their transfer targets' prices have just doubled.

Bristol City - without a doubt my most favourite opposition club at the moment. Thank you for being so charitable. ££££
