Trump and Clinton are now tied in the polls at 45% each.

You know it might have been better for them to have released Donald Trumps controversial video a week before the election and not a month before.

Does anyone know what kind of time the results will come in? I assume Wednesday morning rather the middle of the night.

I'm surprised that's so early, even if voting ends earlier than it does here there doesn't seem to be any time for Vote counting.

I think it's more to do with how long it takes a state to declare rather than how long it takes to count all the votes. So if a candidate is way behind in a state they will concede it and the electoral college votes will be declared for the winner before the votes have all been counted. If it goes down to the wire however it can take days. I'm pretty sure Florida took five or six days to declare in 2012 for example.

Unless it is an absolute landslide for Clinton, with Trump being Trump I have a feeling this one could go on for a few days, if not going all the way to the courts a la Gore v Bush).

I'd imagine the black and Hispanic vote will win it for Clinton.

Clinton will win by a landslide I feel. This 'closeness' is just a media stirred frenzy. The polls can't be taken too seriously, as the polls for our last General Election were close and we all know what happened there...:ffs:

Isn't it more likely that the shy-Tory phenomena will be prevalent here too?

But Donald Trump doesn't even want to be president.

Saw this on Niall Ferguson's Twitter feed. NBC/WSJ poll. Pretty much hinting at the above. Could be a lot of shy Trump supporters out there.

Of the handful of Americans I know abroad the majority are Trump supporters.

Trump getting in surely will be the final nail in the coffin for the world's view of America, and their image isn't great in the first place. I've not spoken to a single individual who isn't amazed he's gotten this far, never mind going all the way.

Yes. And those 8 years are surely a significant factor in why the global perception of America ended up far worse than it was in the 80s and 90s. Any gains since Obama took the helm will be reduced regardless with these two, but with Trump it will be far, far worse. Just imagining him as arguably the worlds most powerful individual makes me piss myself laughing, then I remind myself that it's a genuine possibility.

Bush at least had a cabal of Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Cheney et al advising him/de facto running the White House.

Hard to see who Trump would turn to, seeing as he's alienated so many.

Who would it favour, though?

Trump supporters tend to be bombastic and loud about it, whereas Clinton is the status quo, establishment option. It's entirely conceivable that people could be more shy about supporting her than him.

People should be thoroughly fucking embarrassed about supporting either of them.

I think it's pretty clearly more socially acceptable to support Clinton than Trump. Celebrities seem pretty open about it.

May sound daft but...

The American vote system uses computers instead of paper, why does it take so long to add up votes then?

Don't think Hillary's really that bad in the grand scheme of things.

Who else is staying up to watch DEBACLE then. Got the supplies in but not sure I'm fully prepared for a TRUMPOCALYPSE

So how long does Trump live for if he's somehow declared the winner?

I have to wake up around 4 every morning to take the 3 year old the loo, I'll check the news if it's confirmed by then. If not at 6.30 when I get up. But staying up all night? Nah, I enjoy my sleep too much.

Oh, me too. I've taken the day off tomorrow so no probs on that front. Not sure I'm in the mood for a late, late one though - kinda hoping Hills wins Florida early or something...
I'm off tomorrow too. My only worry is running out of wine. Poor preparation tbh.

Wish I could stay up. But I've got an awful cold and two interviews tomorrow so probably not a wise idea.

The last US election I stayed up all night for was 2004 - dozens of us packed into our sweaty little common room in halls of residence as we had no internet or TV at all in our rooms (teenagers, ask your parents). God that was fucking grim.
