Watched my first ever episode of Sherlock yesterday.

Is Benedict Cumberbatch always like that?

Pretty much. Cucumber Patch has always played Sherlock in a way that accentuates the douchier elements of the character: the arrogance, the impatience, the flighty self-indulgence, the Aspergers-esque insensitivity to others, etc. Most of these flaws have some basis in the Conan Doyle stories, but there they are either less pronounced or better offset by the more admirable character traits.

This grated a lot less in the earlier series. Although Moffat and Gatiss did various things to modernise the franchise (Sherlock uses GPS and wears nicotine patches! Watson writes a blog!), none of these, however sigh-inducing, interfered much with the basic formula. People generally like the Holmes stories because they enjoy Holmes and Watson's interaction and enjoy detective stories in which mysteries are solved using observation and logic. The earlier episodes mostly stick to that; and using that very plot-driven type of storytelling, the lead character sometimes being an unlikeable dick isn't a huge problem.

It's become much more problematic from Series 3 onwards because they've tried to flesh out the characters and introduce more soap opera type elements into the story. The latest episode was a new nadir in that respect.

In conclusion, you should watch American Crime Story: The People versus OJ Simpson instead.

I did! It was fantastic, except for Cuba Gooding Jr., who was rubbish.
Yeah, there are a few miscasting problems, with Gooding Jr. and Travolta the worst. I really didn't like Schwimmer at first either, though I've softened my view on that somewhat as the series has progressed.

Those niggles aside, it's pretty stellar. Only up to Episode 6, though. As usual with TV stuff, I am about a year behind.

Since I'm determined to pass on at least one useful recommendation, check out Show Me A Hero instead.

(If you've seen that too, I've got nothing).

I've recently ordered all of those on DVD, very much looking forward to them arriving!
Yeah they changed one or two of the stories in them I believe, but they are the closest in spirit to the books where there is genuine warmth between Holmes and Watson, and Holmes regards Watson as a genuine friend and partner. Most of the others Holmes looks down on Watson as in the recent adaptation, or keeps him as a pet as in the old Basil Rathbone ones where poor old Watson was just a blundering buffoon there purely for comic effect.

There was never and will probably never be a better Holmes than Brett portrayed, even when he was overweight and very ill in the last few series just before his own demise.

When I was at junior school we had a history teacher who was a massive Holmes fan - he just showed us the Brett videos for most of the lessons! Remember those times very fondly, hence the purchase!

Just watched the first episode of Tina & Bobby which aired last night on ITV and really enjoyed it, but then I'm a tad biased when it comes to anything West Ham related.

I have been told about another Amazon show. Sneaky Pete. Over 1000 reviews and over 1000 5 out of 5*.

Looking forward to starting this one.

The inimitable Homeland is back!

The strapline for season 6 is "Yes - we're afraid that this purportedly hard-hitting, ripped-from-the-headlines chronicle of the American intelligence community zeitgest was mostly in the can before the last 3 months happened. Oops".

I skipped Homeland after Brody was hanged. Had totally lost interest in it without him and tbh Clare Danes was annoying.

btw: Zeitgest? Do you mean the German Word "Zeitgeist"? Has this word made it into the english language, too?

Point out one of my typos again and I will walk directly to your house and punch you hard in the tummy, alright?

The Killing ( US Version) Series 1.
Have watched the first 3 episodes and my first impression is it's slow, can anyone tell me if it's worth staying with?

Ah, a typo? Okay. I wouldn't dare to point that out deliberately.
So it was really Zeitgeist and that word made it into your language, too? Thanks for indirectly answering my question.

Fortitude series 2 on Sky Atlantic. Like they sometimes do they've put the whole series out on boxsets straight away so you can watch it at your own pace.

No, it's utter pish.

Dirk - It may interest you to learn thatweltanschauung” and “schadenfreude” have also made their way into English.

I knew about "Schadenfreude" but "Weltanschauung" is new to me. Thank God it's not "Weltherrschaft" (a typical german attitude in the past /s)

Yeah quite liked Fortitude, and the wee Spanish lass is cute! Hopefully series 2 will be good too.

I liked the setting but the story was a bit trashy. Had to laugh a bit when those "prehistoric" bees attacked Luke Treadaway, the Dr Frankenstein from Penny Dreadful :D

Actually I am watching the 1st series of Goliath on amazon prime. Quite a prominent cast with the always brilliant Billy Bob Thornton, William Hurt, Maria Bello and others. And it's a David E Kelly Law series. I liked all his other law series (Boston Legal, The Practice....) very much so this one won't disappoint me. I am sure about it!!!

Finished Sneaky Pete on Amazon. I loved it! Started quite slowly, but got better and better and very cleverly done. Definitely worth watching if you have Amazon.

Nearly finished series 2 of Fortitude as well (1 episode left). A bit more mental than last time but again, very good viewing.

Amazon are doing a tv series for Taken.

Looks pretty good to me, I will be giving that a watch.

24: Legacy starts tomorrow as well. First one without Jack Bauer which seems a bit strange but I will watch it anyway, as I love the normal 24 and I love this style of show. I am hoping that they do what they done with Fortitude, which is put every episode on catch up before it comes on TV. Not a fan of 1 week at a time so I might just let it record and watch in a couple of sittings.

I'll give Taken a watch but not a 24 series without Jack Bauer as it would be like watching Minder without Arthur Daley in other words unwatchable.

I think I just need to get my head around him not being in it, and think of it as a new programme. I would have thought they might have carried on the UK one from the last series but it seems it is a whole fresh cast, but produced by Kiefer Sutherland.

I had my doubts about 24 being set in London but for me it was one the best series although nothing touches the first one.
