u turn us into a police state it's a victory for the terrorists. don't do their job for them ffs

What would you do to ensure public security then, just carry on oblivious until something slips under the intelligence agencies radar and we get another attack? There are almost certainly more coming.

we (the uk) have had lee rigby in the past decade that's it. that's the death by islamists in the uk. we plainly, based on that, have a good counter-terrorist network so why would we need to institute a police state when what we have is plainly working so well? shooting anyone with a beard when we are a safe, essentially harmonious society is a recipe for disaster and radicalisation. u are playing into their hands

Things are going to slip passed intelligence agencies, they just are. It's something we have to accept. To believe armed police patrolling and conducting unwarranted stops and searches will make you any safer is absurd.

NSFW.

Incredible, terrifying footage from a journalist who lives opposite the Bataclan. Apparently he was later shot in the arm from a gunman in the window opposite when helping people into his apartment. I hate to think what must have been going through the head of that poor person lying on the ground, unable to crawl away from the entrance as they tried to do something on their smartphone. No amount of empathy could imagine that.

Arming police and bolstering numbers on patrol at busy times does not = police state in my book.

IS is growing, there are already more then 700 UK radicals who've left the country to join up undetected, going on that there is plenty of communication going under the radar already. Another attack will almost certainly happen at some point, the more armed units in the vicintiy the less casualties when it does.

no but 'neutralising anyone acting suspiciously' sounds (exactly) like extra-judicial executions and a recipe for profiling. charles de menezes erryday

There are things called Armed Response Units for that. They don't arm the poilce for riots, and for good reason. We'd end up killing ourselves more than any terrorist.

I never said we did. You said Lee Rigby was the only incident it the last decade. It obviously wasn't, and now you're being your usual cringeworthy self trying to argue semantics writin lik a fukin ****

it was obvious what i was talking about. rigby is the only non terrorist to die in a islamist attack within the past decade (i admit i forgot about glasgow). u bought up semantics by arguing the difference between 'within the past 10 years' and calendar year. please try and keep up luv

How many lives could have been saved last night had armed response units been in the direct vicinity? More armed police on the ground is crucial in situations like that.

The Gendarmerie are armed. You can't have a GIGN unit on every street corner ready to go into battle. Attacks like this and Mumbai are impossible to defend against, you have to stop the source.

Fair enough, it's just bloody frustrating to see people defenceless to attacks like this. Maybe the US gun lobby have got a point?

Jesus christ. We want less nutters running around the streets with guns and your trust in the police is amazing. How do you define someone acting suspiciously? Nervous Police walking around with twitchy fingers is the last thing we need.

If me or my family and friends were attacked then I'd like to have the right to defend myself, rather then be forced to watch people shot or taken hostage before any armed response units eventually turn up. That or at least know that help was close by.

Would you rather lie on the floor and wait to die or shoot back at the fuckers?

Would you rather that it was easier for people with problems to have access to guns so they can go and shoot up anybody they want?

More people are killed by random gun killings in America every year than from terror attacks. Their gun related homicide rate per 100,000 people is 3x as high as in the UK.

More than 30,000 people are killed by firearms each year in America apparently after some very quick research.

So yeah you've convinced me actually.

Success, war over.

Then revisit the gun laws if it's become a problem.

I've edited my post to correct the numbers a bit above Chris. I can only disagree with you if you think arming citizens will make us safer day to day.

So if you are ever caught up in an attack like this, you'll accept the fact that there is no immediate armed response and you'll have no way of defending yourself or your friends/family? Doesn't sound good to me.
