Wigan do NOT have a bigger fan base than Oxford United.
They do, last year was the first time in 10 years they didn't average 10k+ regardless of what tier they were playing in, last time Oxford averaged 10k+ was in the 80s.

The same Wigan that averaged 1,742 in the mid nineties? The same Wigan that couldn't sell their FA Cup Final allocation at Wembley? The same Wigan that only averaged 7,200 when they won this league in 2003?

They are a small club, that had a rich benefactor who took them to the promised land. They averaged decent gates while there, but have a small historical fan base. If Oxford United had the same success as Wigan, we would get bigger gates than them. We took 31,000 this year and 35,000 last year to a tin pot cup final at Wembley. Wigan would not do this. That is the definition of having larger fan base.

Given similar seasons, Oxford United will average more than Wigan next season.

Isaiah Osbourne doesn't want to play for our manager so will be leaving - probably staying in this league as he is a good player but is also 29 with a dodgy knee and can't last more than 60 minutes.

Whilst I agree with your reasoning, it has to be pointed out that you couldn't squeeze more than 11,000(?) or so into the Triangle.

It is difficult to perceive Wigan as a 'big' club no matter which league they are in.

Fair point Dan, but although our stadium currently restricts us, it doesn't define us. Plans are afoot to change ownership of it, making it a community trust stadium, and improve and increase the capacity to aver 20,000.

Current "capacity" is 12,500 but there is always a ridiculous amount of seats lost to segregation, on account of us being seriously nawty, so it's usually about 11,600 or so.

Get with the times Eric our fanbase is not the same as it was in the mid nineties, and actually we did sell out for the Cup final. Either way you dont judge a fanbase based on how many day trippers come out the woodwork for Wembley who will never come to watch you again unless it's at Wembley. Not to mention the distance in travel etc. You judge a fanbase based on how many come to watch you every week.

Well let's judge how many watch each of us next season then, on a level playing field.

Let's see what your crowds are after a few seasons back in the lower divisions. Back to where they were I'd suspect.

Don't give a fuck about us, yet watch a team in the league below you and know all about us. Course you do pal. I can name about five non-Oxford players in this league but you've got the in-depth reports on Joe Rothwell and Marvin Johnson.

Can you send me a link to your blog article on false nines and the death of tiki taka

Nice to see you're already backtracking. Can't wait to see Wigan appoint someone from a team that finished below us.
Yes, I have a Sky Sports subscription and watch football league games, surprisingly....

As Bobbin' says, the fact you could name five non-Oxford players says a lot about the amount of football you watch, and also suggests that you have no idea about Wigan either so you're not in a position to comment.

I'm surprised you're so offended mucker; manager in doing well and getting poached by a bigger club shocker.

How long until everyone comes for Oztumer?
Could probably see us being at least interested if Neilson was impressed on Sunday. Would be an ideal replacement for Reeves and good competition for Aneke.

Anyone want a striker that is shot of confidence and scored a tenth of his preseason target? Nicky Maynard will inevitably be available on a free.

Our keeper Adam Smith has announced he's leaving, strong rumours Zander Diamond will be off north of the border for a homecoming as well. Two big blows. Smith was not really a surprise as he was only playing at this level due to the Thailand/Leicester debacle, and Diamond has a young family so it's not a surprise he wants to move closer to home at 32 years of age.

Am no getting offended pal, just calling bullshit. You're right that I don't know much about the Wigan team, which is why I don't deliver meaningless verdicts on whether our own team is better.

But the point you took issue with wasn't about Wigan. It was about Appleton. And I reckon I know at least 10% of what you do about Appleton.

As already said, we can all come back to see the excuses you make when they appoint someone else.

Any guesses where Smith is going? Always very impressed with him so be good not to have to play against him next season.

Wouldn't mind us taking a look at Adam Smith, we need a back up keeper to replace Anders Chocolate Firegaard.

Well unless it's reported that Appleton was approached and turned it down (which wouldn't happen) then there'll be no excuses to make, other than they didn't fancy a naff manager.

I didn't say he would, did I?

So someone other than Wigan has approached him then?

Probably the fact he's a non league journeyman 28 year old who already flopped in the football league

Bit harsh to say he flopped. He had a season with Luton and got released after being accused of assault (later cleared of all charges). The guy clearly scores goals, and that seems to have been your big issue this season so it seems like a decent fit.
