Yeah you don’t want to be commuting from Hastings to Barrow for training every day.
Just the 732 mile round trip.

We used to have a keeper who did exactly that (well once or twice a week for the matches) - Clark Masters. Was being paid peanuts for something like a 24hr round trip every match!

I wonder if the usual types on Twitter that would have vocally stated how shit he was and would be no great loss might now be backtracking?
There will probably be a few who do U turns!

Pleased enough he’s come back. Solid defender who gives everything and knows the club inside out. A bit surprised he’s gotten a 2 year deal but hopefully he can carry on his form from last season.

Apparently our interest in him cooled when he wanted to be paid the same wage as Vaughan. What’s the O’s playing budget like, not in the Salford league I guess, but one of the higher in L2?
I am sorry that i need to do this but could you please just try to find some positivity. There is over 4 weeks until the season begins and pre season friendlies mean nothing in May next year.
If we have the same squad on the day the season starts then i accept your better knowledge but until then stop going on club forums and being the prophet of doom. It is not good to read.

It’s not fair to just guess that it’s just financial because you are upset he’s left.

Honestly, it’s not worth getting so worked up over, part and parcel of football and you’ll get over it.

Apparently we’ve signed some forward that no-one from mansfield has ever heard of.

I bet Soup Ladle would move to Mansfield if he was offered more money for doing the same job. I know I would. Who doesn’t want to earn as much money as possible.

Expecting loyalty from footballers is daft, it’s a job.

In fairness his stats aren’t upto much, he scored 6 in 36 games for morecambe before dropping down to the conference.

Scoring 14 in 37 last season against the cat&fiddle and duck&partridge in non league hardly inspires confidence either.

still, in nigel we trust

As I said I have no problem players moving for money. I work in the Middle East. I didn't move here to be immersed in Islamic culture.

I'm more frustrated with the club. Firstly that they handed out one year deals and not 1+1 and we're obviously still offering peanuts. This is a great chance to reset the club after 4 horrible years but looks like it's just the same old.

I also don't like the goodbye craic he's done. If you want to move just move. Thank the fans for the support but all this emotional shite when you're just moving to Mansfield is a bit OTT.

Why should we be annoyed at Bradford City?

The one thing with Oates you’d question is when he has played this level before didn’t look anywhere near as effective as he was at Hartlepool.

The closer you get to the season you do have to fear for Hartlepool somewhat. There is a huge job to rebuild now. I think for as long as Challinor is there they’ll be ok ultimately but it’s a tough ask for him.

Oates has just had the season of his life, his stock is at an all time high, footy is a short career and he’s got himself a two year deal at a club who can afford to pay him more than us, it’s disappointing and I’d of rather kept him but these are the breaks.

Oates has had very limited success in the EFL with both us and Morecambe in the past and he’s not going to be playing against fat knacker defenders every week, so it’ll be interesting to see how he gets on.

DC isn’t particularly happy with him, regarding a total lack of communication with the club, so I guess that has left a sour note.

They’ll probably do a barrow, be lower bottom half and do enough to stop up.

the conference season ending so far behind the league hasn’t helped them either

Who are the likely strugglers this year? You’d have to put the two promoted sides plus Scunthorpe in the mix, plus Swindon if they don’t get sorted quickly. Can’t see a lot of other contenders apart from that, most clubs seem to be doing solid business and/or have decent managers.

I think Scunny unless something major happens will do well to stay up. Other than that you're right there isn't an obvious candidate. I think it seems like Swindon are going to have their ownership situation sorted before long though they are going to be playing catch-up with a new manager and recruiting a new squad. Other than that maybe Rochdale could find it tough sledding as they have some off field issues also. Sutton I think will be ok.

Would include Oldham who have an owner who is batshit crazy but they always seem to manage mid-table in spite of him and Curle is a good enough manager to see them ok.

I think scunthorpe and Harrogate will struggle. Scunthorpe lost there best player esia and under an embargo will still beat vale though. Harrogate have lost a few players aswell one of them is a player that signed for us but can't remember his name.

Another one DC rescued from the football scrap heap.
Oates admitted it has been his best season ever,so why didn’t he stay & play for the manager who’s got the best out of him?
Apparently we offered a very good deal, but who knows what’s classed as a good deal.

There is a bit of that for me as well, leaves a bit of sour taste especially if you seen the statement put out by the club.

And I'll think he'll do well in L2. He's got pace, power, can create and his finishing is getting better. He's a better player than Gime Toure for me and the last time I checked he was doing alright with Carlisle (?)

Tbh, i think hartlepool will follow in mansfield’s foots steps, i think if you come up you normally do in a much better state than when you went down (sadly not so for macc).

Also the difference between the conference top half and league 2 isn’t great at all.

For said reason it can be easy for you to recruit well, ride the wave and do well in league 2, sadly we didn’t embrace that finished in mid table struggled massively the next but still here 7 seasons later.

I can’t see hartlepool struggling though

We’ve now got loads of competition upfront, I expect Knowles to go back out on loan but not going to be easy for Oates, especially considering we’ve signed Danny Johnson and Oli Hawkins this summer too.

For what it’s worth I get the feeling our fanbase is a bit concerned we’ve signed another Jamie Reid, who’s found it near impossible to get anything close to the sort of goals and stats he achieved in the misery of non-league football.

That’s mainly because he’s shit.

Our record of signing non league forwards since we’ve been back in the league has been abysmal, so the concern is genuine.

However, none of those managers have been nigel clough, you won’t find a better manager in league 2

at least that means they'll do the double over Mansfield too...
