Not sure a player like McClean's coming down here to sit on the bench. An interesting one.
It’s the footballing equivalent of not being in a school play with a speaking part as and put with the others not picked to form a “choir” just to be inclusive

I still feel this pain 4 decades later

Genuine question, what is Wrexhams long term transfer strategy? I’m presuming the idea is to just sign the best players available, not worry about sell on potential because the commercial side will cover it all?

Stockport County.
Always thought McLean was a good player to be honest. But I've always thought he looked like kid playing the Banjo in Deliverance. So I give with one hand and take away with the other.

I said this all the way through last season and was assured the plan was just to invest what was needed to get out of non-league and then they’d start being more sensible. Dropping £250k on a 34 year-old maybe falls into that, I don’t know.

I don't think sell on potential really comes into our thinking at all nowadays. We have signed younger players (Dalby, Barnett, O'Connor for example) but tend to buy players in their mid to late 20s. You get the odd exception like Foster and (apparently) McClean, but most are signed with the current and next step in mind.

It'll be interesting if we do manage to go up this year because there are a core of players who we signed two years ago you'd think would possibly be surplus to requirements Tozer, Palmer etc.

Genuine question and not having a dig but how long will the Hollywooders hang around if you stagnate for a couple of seasons.

I guess it’s because you can get who you want to an extent, I just find your insistence on paying fees a bit weird. Loads of good players out of contract every summer and if you can drop that much on a 34 year-old then you’ve got your pick of anyone in League Two or most of League One pretty much.

Like 90% of your signings, it’s a good one until you look at the fee. Obviously you’ve got the money so it doesn’t matter that much, but rich people don’t get and stay rich by being wasteful and all that. You obviously have a really good team, I just reckon you could have a team as good and have saved about £1m in transfer fees by this point.

James McClean. Just what the over saturated Wrexham media love in needs.

God I'm bored of it already.

No idea to be honest. They say they are in it for the long haul, but we will plateau at some point so we will see I guess.

Hopefully it's after they rebuild the Kop, refurbish the rest of the ground and build us a new training ground.

Some of your rebuilding is being done through loans though isn’t it, rather than direct investment?

The always sunny fella will probably stick around for a while I reckon, dunno how much dollar he has though compared to Reynolds

I'm not sure you are allowed to be, it's way too early.

Although I'm anticipating a small drop in media love in this season compared to last. Now that was saturation but that was in part due to a great season/title race/story thanks to the Sexy Stylish Pies and FC Hollywood

There were some loans in the last financial returns. The turnover has had a big jump since then be all accounts.

We've had 15 years (probably a lot more tbh) of underinvestment in all areas of the club so whilst transfer fees grab the headlines a lot of money is going into other things.

Yeah I’m not saying it’s anything to worry about, just wondering why if your turnover is as high as said the loans are still on the books? Would surely make more sense to pay them off and save on the interest?

I might be wrong, the Wrexham boys know more than me, but I think most of the ground regen is being paid for by Levelling Up public money. That was my understanding anyway, as didn't they originally get turned down for it but got it on appeal? I have no idea if it's repayable or just basically spent out of public funds.

We failed at the Levelling up bid. I think the public money has come from the Welsh Government regen fund. I don't think it's repayable?

The business case is that the work will bring 3x the investment into the local economy. That's what they say anyway!

Ah, thanks for the correction, I thought there was public money in somewhere. On one hand you think, cheeky sods 2.5m is less than Reynolds earns when he goes for a poo, but on the other hand if someone will give you money you don't say no. When we built our new stadium part of it was a council loan but that was repayable, probably a totally different funding pot to what you got though so who knows.
EDIT: ignore the amount there, I misread this https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-65313484.amp it doesn't actually say how much it is just a 'substantial amount' of the 25m total fund, whatever that actually means.

McClean is a good player. But odd more hasn’t been done given funds available before the season. For example surely with big cash to spend you’d get someone incredible upfront? Waters seems to be very average in terms of cv to be potentially starting a season opener.

£250,000 for a 34 year old. Madness!

With Championship wages to boot

McClean confirmed. Don't know what to think, he's always come across as a scruffy raggedy arse wide player. And at 34 has he actually got much left to give? Weird one for me.

McClean didn’t cost £250k. Nowhere near.

We’ll have to pay more than that to land the striker from Harrogate that we are after though.

Yep, season long loan. What’s he like?
I’ll leave that for you to decide. He only played as much as he did cos it was contracted otherwise we pay more for the loan. Sums up our dreadful approach last season.

Tozer, Palmer, Young and all 3 keepers out of contract in the summer, will be a busy one

As for McClean. It's marquee signing for sure. Where he will play - we will find out Tuesday night I guess

He'll clearly play as a left wing-back, Parky is 5-3-2 til he dies.

He will decent in this league, I highly rate Mendy but its good to have some proper competition for him and he does tend to pull his hammy a few times a season
