Cox was excellent for us, but Russell Slade was the only manager to ever really get Cox playing to his top form. From 2010-2014 when Slade was in charge and Cox was with us, he was deliverying top performances every other week without fail in League One, goals and assists virtually every week.

He has been rumoured to have an ego on the training ground. Which only Russell Slade it seems has been able to get keep intact.............Ian Hendon dropped him from our squad completely for an away game at Morecambe back in October 2015 because he apparently had a difference of opinion in terms of tactics I think, which led to an arguement..........
You can have Russ back if you like.

As risky as this appointment is for Chesterfield, I think it might just work out. I'm assuming most of the fanbase is supporting it?

An overwhelming majority, yes.

Announcement to be formally made Friday afternoon. The rumours re his chosen assistant are around Frankie Bunn and Paul Hart, with Shane Nicholson to return as fitness coach as well.

Neil Aspin's odds have been slashed overnight and now as low as 7/4... cut his teeth in non league with Halifax and Gateshead and a Vale legend... would be a hugely popular appointment with the fans, one that was wanted when Adams left in 2014.

Seem to be a new favourite every day so not sure what info the bookies have!

If it is Aspin, I hope you don't any pretty football. I would work on strengthening the next muscles!

Russ is an ok manager, but it can take him time to build up his own team - Not a quick fix manager.

I wouldn't take him back right now, we'd never get out of the National League! ;)

No one knows... but he has hinted it’s him. All we know is we approached Accrington for Coleman and or Bell as their chairman tweeted about rejecting it.

No one really knows who the three candidates are at the moment but the fans seem to think from his tweets it’s a done deal for Adams and Aspin to come in (and possibly Micky Cummins too as believe he’s a coach under him too)

Yeah micky cummins is reserve team coach. But if its aspin would sure would be a bolt out of the blue. Nothing from gateshead that hes been approached and hes even done a interview about next game

Aspin would be a weird one from a footballing point of view IMO.

I agree with Luke. Aspin doesnt exactly play attractive football and certainly has not set the world alight at Gateshead. In the FA Cup last year they were extremely poor against us in both ties with us eventually winning in ET because we wanted it more and we went on to finish 18th and conceded almost 100 last year..

Not the man I would want to keep me in the FL.

48% win record over ten years in management, had almost godlike status at Vale Park... we have a huge lump up front in Pope and one in Barnett so don't exactly have the players to play carpet football either. Working under the guidance of Micky Adams he will revive the club without doing anything in getting the fans buzzing and give us some rare light in the darkest days in our long history at the moment.

At the moment attractive football isn't high on our agenda, simply avoiding our first relegation out the football league is...

That's of course if Aspin is one of the three candidates and Smurf isn't creaming over a big name...

If I had the choice Powell would be the man, but Aspin would be better than the likes of Westley that have been linked.

I get the feeling that Vale fans are putting 2 and 2 together to get 5. Reading into things that simply aren't there. Smurthwaite doesn't help himself by playing up to it. Not bad for someone who had supposedly taken a step back from having anything to do with the club and had become "disconnected".

We've stuck out a similar BUY TICKETS type of statement including opening up the ticket office until 7pm tonight. Presser at 2.30pm to unveil the dream team. Social media is buzzing as you could imagine.

I'm not convinced by Aspin either.

A degree of a gamble, not to the degree of Chesterfields gamble due to his managerial history but both clubs appear to be going for fan appeasement. Radio reported Askey had two interviews, fans went in meltdown then Smurf denied it so did he change minds potentially on fan reaction?

All of a sudden even the home of depression OVF is now in a meltdown of excitement and hope at the return of one of the greatest defenders to play in the Black and White, backed upstairs by the greatest manager we have had since the fabled John Rudge... or even with him there too in some capacity and potentially one of our best midfielders this millennium, the last goal scorer in the potteries derby.

A fan base on its knees, most tired of fighting for the club after recent battles off the field (V2001 era), with many fans not bothering going or given up hope. This appointment could be the get out clause Smurf needs to at least gain slight favour back with the fans...

Is it a gamble yes, but its one that if it comes off could at least give us our club back in terms of the lost fans and lost hope. I dare say in North Derbyshire the board there are hoping and doing this for the same reasons as we would if Aspin is indeed to return where he is a legend.

I'd rather have Powell or someone of that ilk but if we wont pay the wages required then of the people linked he could be the best option we have. (Although looks as though we are going on another January spendathon with Smurf vowing to give up his new wheels in Jan to back the new man) which in reality means we will get a couple of cast offs at 10:59PM on deadline day, a half decent player who has more injuries than A&E and 87 new loan signings from Championship youth academies ...

Nobody predicted Jack Lester's number two correctly it seems. Nicky Eaden.

Wonder how much debt Carson has piled onto Allen's ever increasing weight on his shoulders, given they've paid Forest compo, had to pay Branston off, and bring in a new backroom team?

I know Allen makes his money through the gambling industry, but they don't usually make massive gambles themselves.

I don't want aspin as manager the best defender vale have ever had in my lifetime. We have had ex players before like Foyle and Glover and they weren't good enough and there legendary status was tarnished because of this.
We need an experienced manager really so Martin Allen would be the one for me. He is good at getting players fit he used to have them on exercise bikes during half time breaks and swimming in lakes in pre season he would get these injury crock players fit.

If he's still up for it, Martin Allen is a good shout for a team in a hole. He was ridiculously harshly sacked by us in one of Ray Trews ( our unlamented previous owner ) more moronic moments of pique. He kept us up and in one pre season got together a competitive mid table Div 1 team.
He also got the fans onside and gave us optimism.
Gillingham, Barnet and us are no further on than when he left those clubs which is testament to how effective he is.

Martin Allen would be a good short term choice if you're stuck with the squad you have till the end of the season, he'd keep you up no doubt. Long term though he tends to go bat shit crazy and eventually earns himself a deserved sacking.

Issue would be Allen and Smurf working together... two very outspoken and not always easy people.

A journalist has said we haven’t approached Gateshead, our press saying Aspin is one of the three targets Smurf mentioned and some fans supposedly in the know suggest contact has been made... so we will see.

Who the other two is anyone’s guess, Powell has been at the club last week one day apparently and would be ideal...

Will be an interesting few days anyhow. Whoever comes in has some work to do though, confidence is at the lowest and Brown has left us with a massive squad that’s got a lot of loanees. Have some very good players in Worrall and Denton to work with and some really decent kids coming through like Turner and Gibbons so isn’t a lost cause but if we are spending in January we need to offload because our squad size is ridiculous.

Also need to figure out how Lawrie Wilson went from decent promotion winner with Bolton to someone who looks like he’s never seen a football before and reverse spell that’s turned him shite!

Difference with Martin Foyle and Dean Glover is that neither had managed before and we were their first role... basically the same situation as Michael Brown. Aspin has a decade of management behind him.

Powell would be my number one choice for us, not that we'll make any contact with him at all, I wouldn't be surprised if we'd spoken to Adams actually (is he confirmed at yours yet?).
