New owner's minted, and they're the losses for last season, in the PL. We've since cut our wage bill massively (there were relegation clauses, and we've shifted a lot of deadwood), so we should be fine.

How far can we go under tony? And if and when we get back to the premier is Bruce the right man to lead us forward.

The sky is the limit, as long as he stays interested. As it was with Lerner.

As for Bruce, give him the season (unless we're looking extremely likely to drop) and see where we are then imo. He deserves a chance at a proper club with a bit of money, as he's said himself, this is by far his biggest job so far. Hopefully he doesn't fluff his chance.

let's hope he don't get bored then. Lerner pumped a lot of money in just to finish 6th then he bottled it which is fair enough as it's his money. Yeah I'd definitely give Bruce a crack in the prem but I can't see him taking us forward much in the prem.

he's not shit in this league but he's not a top defender. Chester is a premier league defender imo. I don't dislike the bloke and the effort is there.
He'd get into most sides, he's limited but he's as solid as they come and he absolutely loves a tackle. I loved him.

he's a championship player so he will do at the moment. Once we go back up we will get Cahill in to replace him.

All that's great, however you also spent way too much on transfer fees this season in an attempt to make an instant return to the Premier League. Could become dangerous if you don't win promotion again next season.

There's something to be said for planning out how much you want to spend on a promotion push, getting in all those players and accepting a topsy turvy season whilst figuring out the best team and shape, settling them all in for a stable summer and a proper go next season with a consistent side. If indeed that's what they planned. Of course Villa might just go spend a ton more money on a load more players and continue the chaos!! Which is kinda what Derby for example seem to do, is it fair to say.

next season is huge. Our biggest season in the modern football era by far imo. If we fall flat on our arse next season then we could end up in big trouble but personally I think we will be top two.

The plan was indeed an instant return, however that was purely a pipe dream in reality. I doubt this summer/January will be near as hectic as the previous ones, as we have a damned good core that only really needs a couple of additions for us to be competing at the top end of the table. You could (and probably should) argue that the squad we have now should be up there, and it should but it needed time to bed in.

As Villa Loyal said, this is possibly our biggest season in a damned long time, failure to get promoted will be extremely devastating next season, I think in January the plan changed, get the players in, accept that the rest of the season is going to be up and down, and go for it full force next season. I mean, we could still theoretically make the play-offs, but that'd require victory in all of our remaining games, and even then a few favours along the way. I've no doubt we'll be at the top end of the table next season, but I've been wrong before, I had us down to finish mid-table last season before a ball had been kicked for example, and we all saw how that went!

I feel if we don't get promoted next season we have one more chance, as after that, the parachute payments are gone. We may (and probably will) be under a transfer embargo by then too. Though there is a lot to be said about the massive reductions in the wage bill we made this season, getting rid of a lot of players, all players had relegation clauses in their contracts cutting their wages (rumour has it, most were as high as 25%), the players out on loan are having their wages paid by the clubs they're at, and a fair few of the players out on loan are looking like they'll stay where they are, the only doubt remaining really is about Veretout. Of course, we could decide to keep hold of some of these players, who knows?

The club needed this season down I feel, regardless of anything else, to recover, to get to know what it felt like to win again (we've won more games this season than we did in the previous 2 so far ffs!), and get a squad settled and ready for a launch at the Premier League, and following that, survival.

Once (if) we hit the Premier League, however, we can pretty much spend whatever the hell we like. Are there even FFP rules in the PL any more? If there are, they aren't bloody enforced.

If, however, things go tits up, it could well take a decade or more for us to fully recover, and by then I can absolutely guarantee Dr Tony would have lost interest and pissed off.

This is one of the remaining beauties of football, however, it still has that unpredictability factor. Burton could win the league next season for all we know (if they survive of course), it's that crazy, and we shall see how things go.

This whole post is, of course, all conjecture, but if we couldn't have that, then what the hell is the point of a forum?

Try using it for work - you would not say that then.
Crashes, deaths, bridge jumpers, broken down cars, and roadworks. It's a nightmare

Our game v blues sold out yesterday and another good thing is the pubs close to the ground will be opening from 8 which surprised me. The witton arms is for home supporters only after giving blues the pub for the cup game the other year. The only shit thing is that apparently reduced allocations work and help to prevent trouble so can't see the allocations going up anytime soon.

Now weren't you lot ranting at Newcastle for saying this same thing (which we didn't by the way) ?
Weren't you also ranting about how much we'd spent to get out of this league ?
And then it came out you'd spent FAR more - and are in dept - while we made a large profit on getting the lame ducks out !!

I guess the difference is that when you came down from the Premier League, you had a squad of wasters who SHOULD have stayed up if they'd put any effort whatsoever in, whereas the squad Villa came down with would probably be on its way to League One right now if it had been kept together. Much greater surgery was needed at Villa.
