Well aren't there just low expectations of Boris Johnson? He's cultivated this buffoon. Pretty much all he says is in car-crash territory. He could be PM soon.

Being brazenly incompetent and clownish worked pretty well for Trump, it appears to have a disarming effect on the public when it comes to criticism. I doubt that the general public believe that Boris Johnson is a better politician than Diane Abbott, rather he is expected to be a buffoon, whilst Diane Abbott is expected to be something closer to the standard politician.

No doubt that Abbott has a tougher task when it comes to public perception than the average MP (for the obvious reasons), but Boris is a bit of an outlier. If Michael Gove gave the embarrassing interview above, he'd be ripped a new one, because people expect a level of competency. I wish these zany Rees-Mogg and Boris characters existed on the Labour side, then they might get away with more facepalm moments simply because they have a bit of that bumbling Hugh Grant English gentleman charm about them.

In Johnson's case, I am genuinely really curious as to why he messed up this interview so badly. He's a very erudite man with long-term experience of interviews and being door-stepped, so I wonder what was on his mind. I have this conspiracy theory that he had just been told something very significant and very unexpected and that dominated his thinking totally. If so, I wonder what it was.

In Abbott's case, she's actually nowhere near as unpopular with the Tories as you might imagine from the rabid reporting of the press. She is also a seasoned politician (and reporter and presenter) and I believe she has just suffered, on several occasions, from information overload. People can't know everything. I think there is somewhat less respect for politicians of any party these days, and any mistake is going to be pounced on by interviewers or will see an opportunity to make a bit of mischief. Maybe Johnson's interview was the same. Personally, I don't think - as is implied many times in this forum - that there was racist intentions by the media.

She made an overtly racist statement about how "White people love playing divide and rule". Whether she was racially abused herself in the past doesn't somehow negate her own racism, although it might actually explain it. The comment itself is not unforgivable, but when she continually lies about what she was saying and refuses apologise for it - all the while pretending to be pro-equality (instead of pro-minority) - then it shouldn't be difficult to understand why people don't warm to her.

I'm not sure those White people that have been affected by racially motivated harassment, assaults, rapes, murders etc. would take much solace in the fact that it happens to non-White people more.

Of course he is to one extent or another, but at the very least he has the sense to admit to what he's said and offer some semblance of an apology for it. The public responds to honestly, or at least what they perceive as honesty.
